Enjoy skiing here at Okushiga Kogen ski area, where Nagano Olympic competition was held. The quality of snow is excellent, with natural powder snow. The slopes are wide and the choices are many, so that the entire family can enjoy. For more, check `hiddenjapanguide.com`

This mountain does not have many tourists but at the same time, there is an international ski school which will cater for tourists or English speakers. Given that it is lack of tourists, you're quite lucky to be in an almost private ski lesson. For...More

We were blessed with fresh snow every night creating my husbands favourite powder skiing conditions. He adventured every morning through forest runs and a multitude of different areas and mountain faces, all linked by gondolas and ski lifts. He then would come back in the...More

Great place for a family ski holiday, featuring many intermediate runs, all below the tree line. Able to access the rest of Shiga Kogen ski area on a super pass.

Okushiga is good for people who like fewer people. The slopes are wide and there aren't many beginners. The downside is that you must walk a far distance from the other mountain to reach Okushiga.

It's the last stop on the Nagaden shuttle but so worth it! Can't imagine staying anywhere else. Great ski runs, wonderful for kids even for first time young skiiers (forget about Snow Gardens) and late starters like me! Super fun Ski Park with humps and...More

This place is slightly harder to get to. I didn't see as many ski school students. Nice pitch. Great deck at the bottom for a nice cold beer. If you hit the snow right off piste would be awesome!

We didnt get to Okushiga until our last day. I wish we found it earlier. Great bakery/lunch options and all manner of runs to ski.

I assume the hotel you refer to is at Shimotakai-gun, Yamanouchi-machi so you will have to either get a taxi or bus up to the ski school. I believe that the Sugiyama ski school has 2 or 3 main locations but our daughter used... More

I think there may be some areas in the region that are still skiing only but there was snowboarding where we were. An American friend who's lived in Japan for 20 years told us that the region realised that they were losing... More
