Famous Onsen - Check up SNOW MONKEY - monkeys take Onsen- hot spring, really.

It was very funny to watch the monkeys interact and to go into the hot springs. They got very close to you so you could really see what they were like

I have been to Yudanaka a few times. Yudanaka Onsen has long history, and there are many Ryokans (Japanese inn) with character. Famous one is ”Kanaguya”, the one appears in ”Spirited Away” (2001 Japanese animated film directed by Hayao Miyazaki).
Yudanaka has many different hot spring sources. Therefore, you can enjoy different types of hot waters depending on the ryokan / hotsprings you go. They have 9 public hotsprings in the town. All of them have different types of hot spring water - if I remember right. Usually you can get keys for these 9 public hot springs for free if you are staying in Ryokan in the area.

We stayed one night here after visiting the snow monkeys and it was our first introduction to a Japanese Onsen. It set the bar as this was hands down one of our best experiences during our travels to Japan. The room, the hospitality, the food! and the friendliness of the staff is something that we will never forget.

Warm welcome and superb traditionally run hotel. Our hostess and staff could not have been more kind and helpful, great Onsens and lovely food.
Yudanaka is a pleasant small town and a good centre for visiting Obuse (Hokusai Museum!), Masumoto, Nagano and surroundings (good train service) as well as the Snow Monkey Park.
A convenient distance if returning to Tokyo (tain to Nagano and then Shinkansen).

Maybe there might not be a lot to see here but walking around leisurely is pleasurable. You meet people walking their dogs, some tending to their chores; small shops and bars and craft stores. Everything we experienced here is different from our city life and it's interesting even to my young adult sons! I chose to stay here at the Ryokan Yudanaka Seifuso, near the train station, and was glad I did. It was easy to come back to after walking around. The SnowMonkey Park and the Ryu-o Ski Park as well as the Shibu Onsen village was accessible from here. 2nights here was just perfect! Stayed from Dec.22-24. We experienced snowfall on our last night and the next day before we checked out, snow had fallen overnight and continued to sprinkle lightly over everything and we just frolicked and enjoyed ourselves that morning! And we didn't have to hurry and miss our train because it was just around the corner! Such wonderful memories to bring home.

We visited in November. After being dropped at the private car park by our shuttle bus, we walked for ~4 kilometres to the hot springs where the monkeys were bathing and playing. A walking stick and good boots are desirable here. Just delightful to see them up close. They appear to be healthy in their natural environment, scaling sheer rockface confidently. Park employees are there to supervise, as the monkeys and tourists intermingle so closely. It would be lovely to see them in winter, with snow all around.

What a great place to visit!!! If you would like to stay at a traditional Japanese hotel, this is the place to go. Everyone was extremely friendly. The onsen was beautiful and relaxing. The rooms were very clean. Breakfast was great too!!!!

If you go early before 9.00am you will see the monkeys before you actually reach the park. After 10.30 it gets really busy so the tranquil forest walk leading to the park is more like M6 on a bad day. Monkeys fed by the rangers relaxing in the pools, totally chilled by the mass of humanity. Kids really enjoyed the experience. One of them nearly lost his phone when not paying attention so we all had a laugh.

Will be in japan soon and was thinking of visiting yudanaka on the 23rd of Nov. We've heard this is a national holiday. Does anyone know if the town's Springs will be open? Would Haye to take a 2-3 hr. train ride just to find the amenities closed. Thanks for any help.

Hi, thinking of booking a tour that stops this I arm, however I am a female that has a tattoo on my back, ( which can be covered with a towel). Does this onsen accept tattoos? Thanks
