Donelda's Puffin Boat Tours is one of the 100 Must-See Destinations in Unforgettable Atlantic Canada! On the 2 1/2 - 3 hour boat tour you'll be amazed at the beautiful rock formations on the way to the Islands , a stop to look at an old sea cave as well as a stop or two to feed some Bald Eagles. The Bird Islands are home to Grey Seals, Bald Eagles ,Atlantic Puffins and other sea birds. Our vessel, Highland Lass has all removable windows down both sides (refit 2012) for easy viewing and taking pictures from the comfort of your seat. Our tour spends over an hour at the Islands viewing birds (more if necessary) this does not include the time spent feeding Bald Eagles on the way to and from the Islands or stopping for anything else of interest, whales dolphins, gannets etc. The tour is offered in English , however there are written transcripts ( limited numbers of each ) of the whole tour available on the boat in English, French and German to make your experience more enjoyable. Please note that tours can be cancelled due to unsafe sailing conditions.

We really enjoyed the tour. The owner knows her birds and was very friendly. We saw a lot more seals than we thought we would which was cool and she fed some eagles which was great to see. The only reason I gave 4 stars is that almost everything to see was on the one side of the boat, we... More

Took Donelda’s tour there recently in late June and went for the afternoon 1.30pm sailing. We were a bit unlucky with the weather; it was rather cold outside as well as inside the boat (it’s a boat with big windows that are taken out around the islands - for better views - so in theory you don’t need to go... We really enjoyed the birding boat tour with Donelda and her husband. For birders and nature lovers this tour is a must! The scenery was glorious and the ride was peaceful. For birders, this tour is not to be missed. We saw eagles, puffins, razorbills, guillemots, herring gulls, great black backed gulls, a common eider, cormorants, lots of seals, swallows,... More

Our original hope was to go on a whale watching tour in Cape Breton. We decided to wait until we arrived in the area to book the trip. While traveling near Halifax we decided to go into a tourist/travel office. I'm so glad that we did. The lady who assisted us is native born to Cape Breton. She earned nothing... More

What a great tour this was. Donelda is a wonderful and knowledgeable tour guide. She provided a lot of great information on our way to the island, and did a great job point out birds on the islands. She was completely engaged with our bird watching. If you're really looking for a great bird experience, this is the tour to... More

We had a fabulous time on this tour. It was a cool and cloudy day but I think our photos turned out better without the direct sunlight anyway! After paying in Donelda's shack/gift shop (discounts for cash and AAA/CAA members) we boarded the boat and set off for the bird islands. During the 45 minute ride there, Donelda explained all... We weren't sure about this tour but had the time and we were SO glad we did this tour. It was a definite highlight. Donelda was very informative about the wildlife and during the cruise out and back to the Bird Islands shared information about lobsters (her husband, the captain, fishes for lobsters) and about the area history. We saw... More

In Sept, 2015, we took two International on this tour and found it extremely interesting. Even though we did not see any Puffins, which we were informed off before the tour, we did see lots of other interesting wildlife, including Eagles that retrieve fish thrown from the boat. Donelda was very informative on all the different species of birds and... More

The weather was cold, rainy and foggy the day we planned to take the puffin tour, so we almost backed out. So glad we did not!! We saw lots of seals, shore birds, puffins of course, and 5 Eagles close up as they came and got a fish right next to the boat (hint: for a good picture, keep your... More
