Lake Mashu and surrounding areas are very beautiful and found this a great place to drive. The misty atmosphere adds an interesting feel to the place. Visited the lake twice and managed to catch a view of the lake from both first and third observatory,...More

We drove there and, as expected, totally hidden by cloud and fog. It is bad luck to see the lake apparently. Paid for parking and enjoyed the Japanese tourist scene.

There are a couple of viewpoints over the lake. Viewpoint 1 with a pay car park where all the coaches go and viewpoint 3 further up the lake which is free and has just as good views. Well worth a stop - the lake was...More

Beautiful sightseeing from the top of the mountain. Great landscapes on both sides. The lake has a beautiful color. We made a lot of great pictures. But once you have reached the observatory, nothing else to do there, little bit disappointing...

For me the better view - with less people and free parking - is at the 3rd observatory, a few kms further along the road. The first thing that will get you at the 1st observatory is the parking charge, from what I remember it...More

The various viewpoints along the crater rim provide superb views west to the Akan volcanoes and east to the peaks beyond the lake. Visit at any time of year.

Certainly this is most beautiful & clearest lake in Hokkaido. The view of the lake at the 1st Observatory was stunning. It was very windy and freezing cold in December but the trip is worth it.

I don’t recommend that. Better to stay over in Lake Mashu for a night before heading back to Abashiri.

Hi: I was there is January so I assume it will be open unless there is a heavy snow cover. When we were there there was some snow but did not interfere with the visit.
