Tip on when and which observation deck to go: Observatory 1&3 is best taken during afternoon, while Ura-Mashu observatory on the east side is best taken in the morning. Parking is free at 3 and Ura-Mashu observatory while 1 is 500 yen. If you are driving, Ura-Mashu on the east side is less crowded as tour bus don't come here.... More

Crater with deep blue water on a clear day. Viewing points are so high the wind feels like it is going to blow you away and will keep you feeling about 10 degrees cooler. Do not forget to turn around and see the view of the other nearby mountains and valleys.

We used the Teshikagaka Eco passport to catch the tourist bus there and back from the Mashu station. Lovely scenery on the way of the Hokkaido countryside. By the passport at the station. Y1500 for two days. Check out the website for a timetable.

We made it to the first observation point (500 yen parking), but it was quite a foggy day...hence the mystery. The souvenir shop is great though, and we had a slice of the famous local melon for just 200 yen. Glad we visited!

We took road 52 from Kawayuonsen which goes to and along Lake Mashu. It is well indicated. After some climbing by car we reached observatory point "3". (Free parking). Cross the road to go up some stairs, the view is breathtaking! Clouds and surrounding mountains mirroring in the crystal clear vulcanic lake. You can distinguish the range of mountains that... More

For less than ten minutes after we arrived at Viewpoint No. 1 of the lake, the surface was just like a super clean mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains and cliffs, as well as the summer sky. You just need to be very lucky. In less than ten minutes to the north from Viewpoint No. 1 is Viewpoint No. 3 (Viewpoint... More

I've never seen anything like it- the lake was so incredibly blue! I guess we lucked out - such a clear day. You have to pay 500 yen for parking at observation point #1, but save that ticket. It's also good for Mt Io sulfur volcano. There's a souvenir shop, WC, etc from this parking lot. Don't bother with the... More

On a clear day, one can look deep into beauty of this lake. it feels magical. Its near Kawayu Osen and Lake Akan. One needs to drive safely along the winding steep road along the mountains and valleys. The observation view point 1 requires a fee which include the car park entry to the nearby Mt Iwo (Io) which is... More

This is one of the 3 famous lakes in Akan National Park, with the other 2 being Lake Kussharo and Lake Akan. But this is my personal favourite. We were really lucky to be there on a clear sunny day and after driving uphill on a winding road, we are rewarded with a magical view of the crater lake. The... More

Drive up the long curving road, winding slowly up the steep mountain side. Pull in at view point 3, but be careful, never before have I felt the force of a wind as strong as I did here. Battle your way to the viewing platform and prepare yourself, what for?, the most magnificent view of a lake so blue it... More
