You cannot beat the views from this lookout but the parking is limited and if you are traveling towards lorne then it is not easy to access but if you can stop , do so and admire the wonderful coastline.

Damn those environmentalists! Geez... they will let trees grow anywhere!

Ok... before you arrange for me to be drawn and quartered... I am joking! Yes, really.

This is another one of the pretty stops along the Great Ocean Road... this one is a bit more formal than others. There is a brick wall, a sign and information boards. The information boards make for interesting reading... the view is lovely. But then there is no such thing as a bad view on this road... well except when the environmentalists don't keep things under control.

Kidding. :)

The joy of nature is that it is what it is... it changes, it evolves and sometimes it encroaches on a view...but not that much. You can still appreciate the view ... you just have to work a bit harder to get it.

Hugging one of the myriads of tight bends in "The Road" & sitting at one hundred & seven [107] metres above Sea Level, the Lookout situated here at Mount Defiance provides one of the best positions from which to experience the natural masterpiece that is created by the rugged mountain ranges meeting the coast.

With unhindered views in all directions I wanted to absorb as much of my surroundings as possible so decided to walk to the end of the stone wall, incorporating the bronze, memorial plaques in the process. In doing so I learnt of a gentleman named Mr Howard Hitchcock whom as well as being a one time Mayor of Geelong, was considered to be extremely civic minded.

Reported to be a staunch supporter of numerous fund raising organisations & public-bodies during both War & Peace time he went on to focus a great deal of energy & enthusiasm into the GOR project.

[ As with the entire Great Otway Region, this area is of Cultural Significance ]:

If the view from Mount Defiance wasn't inspiring enough, then discovering why & how this particular location is of cultural significance was amazing. Consisting of no less than twenty-five [25] Clans, the Wathaurong People who lived throughout this entire region are understood to have referred to this site a Nooraki.

With the overhanging ridges & stand of trees no doubt providing shelter & the fresh water streaming from the rock faces available for drinking it is easy to see why this mountain was important in so many ways to the Indigenous Nations.

A further 'modern day' indication as to the imposing force presented by Mount Defiance is highlighted by it being classed as the "most problematical section of the construction project, resisting efforts to blast out the route from almost perpendicular cliffs."

[Summary]:
Without a doubt a stop here is highly recommended & whilst the 'Road" is amazing, the best part lies in the opportunity provided to appreciate views such as these & the chance to learn so much more about those whom were first to inhabit this stunning Continent.

Thank you for reading this review, we hope that it has been helpful. Please also refer to the photographs as they form a part of he review.

** Safety: Please be aware of traffic as the Memorial is on a tight bend, the road is very narrow & there is limited space for vehicles.

Visited on Wednesday 28th February. I agree it has to be one of the best lookouts on the Great Ocean Road. There is a small parking area there so be careful when driving off again.

One of the issues with the Great Ocean Road is that it's not exactly fun to drive. The scenery is lovely but driving the road itself isn't and if you or your passengers are prone to motion sickness then the twisty and windy road won't be the most fun experience of a lifetime.

Luckily there are plenty of vantage points along the way such as this particular lookout so that you can break up the drive, get some fresh air and grab some lovely landscape photos.

Mount Defiance Lookout provides good views - especially to the eastward. It should be doubly noted that stopping regularly allows the driver to enjoy the scenery. Otherwise they are mainly concentrating on the road ahead and missing out on the views! This lookout is most easily accessed if you are doing the Great Ocean Road in a westwards direction.

The lookout is very simple and on The Great Ocean Road. Trip Advisor has put the marker in the wrong spot it is located 2-3km east of Wye River.

The trees limit the view from here, and the parking is small. You could give this a miss if you like as you will find many other pull-outs with less interupted views

Another great lookout along the Great Ocean Rd. Small area for parking. Not a must see stop but if you have time, why not?
