I woke up at 4.30am to prepare myself for the 1st train at 5.44am from yamagata to yamadara by Senzan line on track 7. It was cold in the morning and a jacket is definitely a must. The sky was not bright till around 6am...More

Okama is a big open basin, the crater of a dormant volcano. When you go, bring along a warm jacket, an umbrella, and a lot of patience. The lovely emerald green crater lake, and the astounding views make it worth it. The price of admission...More

We climbed Mt.ZAO from Yamagata side. Could reach the 9th station by a car and climbed up to the "Katta-dake" peak with less than 1 hour walk. Near the top of the mountain, there is a beautiful volcanic lake named "Okama" which is fulfilled with...More

Trekked all the way from Jizosancho ropeway station to here! Totally worth the hike. It was a most sunny and gorgeous day with very nice mountain breeze. We even saw a Japanese serow on the way!

Okay - I was there and could not see it! The fog was so thick. So my recommendation is to find out the weather conditions before you go - It is about a 1 hour drive from Yamagata. The drive is winding and attractive.

Husband and I had a taxi driver take us up the winding mountain road to see this crater and two water falls. It was stunning. It's quite windy and chilly up top. Bring a coat! At the top is a restaurant and souvenir shop. I...More

Seeing tour buses on this road is just scary; I expect that the drivers know their business, but still we wouldn't take a bus up (or down) this road for love nor money. Our little rental Subaru did fine (n.b. Japan requires international driving license)...More
