stunning location

Wend your way ever upward through the charming village to reach the gardens. the views over the river valley are exceptional and not to be missed. the garden is well laid out and easy to navigate. the planing reflects the arid conditions but there is much to fascinate. The location alone makes warrants a visit.

Fantastic

Wherever you park, you're going to have to climb to the cliff side gardens which hang from the rock face, but the ascent through the ancient streets with their twists and turns is al part of the experience.

Entry into the gardens is reasonably priced and there's a plan of the grounds too to help you during your visit.

The plants and collections are well arranged and some cacti are in terracotta pots on the walls which is a lovely touch.

Take care on some of the paths as you admire the views of Roquebrun and the river.

worth the hard climb

quite difficult to find, this garden is situated up a narrow roadway behind the main street of Roquebrun. Parking is limited so be prepared for a hard climb. The view across the valley is amazing once you get there and the garden is a work in progress (as are all good gardens) and full of unusual plants. Nice little giftshop too.

A must for the plants and the views
May 2014 • Family
The Mediterranean Garden is found at the top of Roquebrun, on south-facing dolomitic terraces which capture heat during the day and keep the warmth through the night. This microclimate is where Roquebrun gets the nickname of "La Nice de l'Hérault" or "The Nice of Hérault". (You will see palm trees and oranges on the trees year round here.)

Among the succulents, cacti, and exotic plants that thrive in the Mediterranean, they also have a collection of mimosas and an orchard to conserve threatened species. About 400 species of plants are found here, many we had never seen before.

The nature trail through the gardens is steep, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a good hike. Check the opening hours on the website.

Mediterranean Garden Roquebrun Languedoc
Jul 2011
Roquebrun is a classic French village in the heart of Languedoc - known as the "Mimosa"capital of France, the mild climate encourages many temperate plants to thrive which may otherwise succumb to the local winters.

In a steep valley of the river Orb, facing south are the beautiful Mediterranean gardens, a stiff walk up through the narrow street of the town brings to to paths and gardens twisting through the hillside.

The views are breathtaking, well worth a visit
