We cruised from Thann to Obernai in a open top car on a nice and sunny august day, visiting 4 vineyards and a number of restaurants, bars and cafe's

We did not. In fact, there were no boats on the Rhine when were there due to high water. We know of a couple of years where the river cruises have not been able to travel the Rhine, so you may want to check that out. We understand that the only one that gives refunds in that instance is Tauck - the others base you out of your boat but then you do bus tours. That's what we've seen, heard, witnessed.
