These canals are most precious water distribution tools created and developed for nearly a 1000 years. It is not enough to just pass thru in your vehicle but rather they must be visited and smelled while riding your VTT mountain bike making enough time to stop watch take pics and enjoy all you can see and hear around. They are... More

August was my visit to La Garette...Coulon...Arcais...Damvix...Arcais...staying a short while at each location enjoying sceneries and watching tourists paddling rented boats on canals covered with weeping willows through marshes and amazing natural landscape. We rented a flat-bottom boat in Damvix and had great fun trying hard to paddle it straight through crook & narrow canals hitting all kinds of thorn... More

We had a quick drive around the area before staying the night in Niort. It was a glorious day and extremely busy (Sunday) and we had every intention of taking the bikes out for a ride.... (as you do) We decided that there were too many people and continued driving in an attempt to find quieter cycle paths but no... More

Wonderful landscape and lovely villages characterize this less well known part of France. We took a pedalo boat out for an hour through a green tunnel of trees, total peace and great fun. some really nice villages too, we spent some time in Damvix.

We took a 1-hour tour departing from La Garette. Our guide spoke English and he was very knowledgeable about the history of the marshes. It was fascinating to learn about the man-made canals, the wildlife and the economics of maintaining this ecologically unique area. We got to see the famous "fire on water" display as our guide stirred up some... More

Take a scenic road trip from La Rochelle though some quaint villages and arrive at lunch time in coulon. Find somewhere that does lunch and the barge tickets for a great deal. There are two restaurants that we saw that have the deal. We had lunch, went for a walk, had a cheeky taste of cognac,(included in our lunch deal)... More

Lovely spot- loads to see- best to do it by boat. Afterwards spend some time in Coulon - Hotel Le Marais is great, family run and very comfy. The hotel- Le Central, inspite of it's name is a good place to eat. Food well cooked, good value for money and friendly staff.
