great little stop for 1-2 hours to explore this area. parking may be an issue during busy times at the designated car park. but worth a quick stop.

Beautiful old town
Oct 2020
We weren't really sure where to park so we just stopped the car somewhere outside the centre and made our way to the top of the hill on foot. Like all the old towns here, the centre part has streets that are about a metre wide (easy to defend) so pedestrian only. Social distancing would be a problem if the place was busy though!

We spent a while meandering through the streets, heading vaguely upwards and admiring the cactii and bougainvillea. The town almost seemed organic with houses flowing into each other and steps going up to front doors or down to others. Some of the houses were well cared for on clean streets, others were decidedly run down or dilapadated.

Every street seemed to have it's own church or chapel though and Greek flags were in profusion, along with the two headed Byzantine eagle. Some of the buildings were really rather impressive, obviously medieval in construction and some looked like Troglodyte houses, more suited to Tatooine.

There were plenty of cafes and restaurants to stop at and the town catered for tourists as well as being a proper community area where life goes on with or without tourism.

As the town is on a hill it is probably a good place to watch both sunrise and sunset but I can't verify that. It was certainly my favourite place on the island and if I visited again I'd choose to spend a few nights here and a few in Oia.

Charming traditional village
Sep 2020
Pyrgos is truly a magical and a charming village which should be visited while in Santorini. Traditional architecture, white houses, galleries, shops. We liked aimlessly wander the winding narrow streets. And as a bonus nearly without tourist. Compare to Fira or Oia it is heaven. Relaxing place. We just sit on the top of Kastleo, winding down and enjoyed the view and the atmosphere. To get here is about 20 minutes from Fira or Perissa beach.

little old city with a charm and plenty of stores and restaurants, different than overcrowded Oia or Fira

A short but steep walk up the Kasteli
Aug 2020 • Couples
Our hotel said we would need trainers but to be honest we managed the walk just fine in sandals. Does leave you a bit out of breath but if you’re fairly fit you’ll be fine. Lovely walk up to the Kasteli and had a Freddo coffee at Francos at the top.

Less touristic place, nice to be discovered, and fantastic view
Oct 2019
We came here by public bus from Oia (Changing at Tira Bus Station)...and the whole journey (with lots of students, locals and tourist) took maybe an hour. When arriving at Pyrgos...you discover a little mountain village in its still early years of tourism... and it was a fabelous visit, totaly relaxed with a nice coup of tea on the top of the hill cafe...overlooking almost 360° of the island.

Very nice village dominated by the castelli. You get a great picture spot if you approach it from the west.
