Lovely experience despite some issues
Aug 2019
If you are visiting nearby and do not hate opera (you don’t need to be an opera fan) this is a fantastic experience. It is a very big open air theatre and watching Puccini operas here is life time experience for most Italians and other art lovers. The theatre is next to the lake, upper rows provide a very good view of the lake and the surrounding hills but certainly sacrifies the quality of sound and sight of the stage in a big open air theatre like this (If you have been lucky to see a concert at the Ancient Theater of Taormina you will be less impressed by the view and the quality of the sound at higher rows on this one). You can buy your tickets online, choose your seats smoothly. Arrive early as we did, you are not allowed to drive into the theater but can park at one of the car parks (fields actually) less than 5 minutes walk to the theater, have a nice walk around lakeside (really beatiful scenary), have dinner at one of the cafes/trattorias (Michelin Plate good cooking/simple standard Da Cecco offers superb food at reasonable prices as compared to the quaility, make sure you book well in advance) and follow the crowd to check in to the theater. We did La Boheme and the stage settings, costumes and choreography were impressive. We were at lower rows so did not complain about the acoustics. Overall this is a lovely experience but a) be prepared for a long night, La Boheme was at 21.15 and with three 20-25 mins intervals finished after 1.00 am b) 10-15 mins queues for drinks or toilets are true if you do not rush out at intervals c) do not forget it is open air, check late night tempature in advance

Opera under the Stars

We took our grandchildren to see Tosca at the Gran Teatro Puccini and they absolutely loved it! They love opera and we’re looking forward to it. The theatre is situated in Torre del Lago near a beautiful lake. The seats were comfortable and the production exceptional. The acoustics unbelievable for an outdoor arena.
If you love opera I highly recommend going to see one of Puccini’s works. You won’t be disappointed!

Opera in the open air
Aug 2018
As you might expect, the singing and playing does not sound as it might in an enclosed space, but the experience more than makes up for it. Well-organised and certainly well-attended, we enjoyed La Boheme and Tosca as much for the spectacle as for the music. Sets were magnificent, but took 25 mins between each act for the scene changes, which makes for a very long evening. The sound of the voices and instruments was not always clear and there are, of course, no sub/surtitles, with everything sung in Italian. Nevertheless, being only yards from Puccini's villa, it is easier to imagine that you are closer to the spirit of these wonderful works

Madam Butterfly Torre de Lago

Saw Madam Butterfly 20 July 2018. Waste of money. Couldn’t hear the singing, which was mediocre to say the least. Appalling set design - 3 lumps of rock and a slope. Bizarre support cast costumes. Left at the interval. Have seen Puccini operas around the world and always enjoyed them. Never again at this venue.

Huge theater
Jun 2018 • Couples
More than 3000 seats are in the theater. It is very well done, easy to come and go. The seats are also not bad. Just if you don't like open-air performances, than dont go.

Just worth the ticket price

The location is stunning and the whole event has a frisson of excitement. But the quality of the singing is barely better than acceptable and the organization is less than impressive. The evening we went, the audibility of the music was affected by strong winds, and half way through, a few drops of rain stopped all proceedings for twenty minutes or so without any explanation. In short, Puccini's music is sublime and the experience is certainly not to be missed, but don't hold your breath about the quality of the cast or the risks of poor weather. And bring a cushion.

Delightful

We liked the production, it was beautiful and of good quality. The theatre is nice and quite comfortable, seats were easily found. They warn you the mosquitoes are a pest, but if you make reasonable precautions and spray yourself with a repellent, you'll be fine. Don't that deter you from the experience. The Puccini festival is becoming better and better each year.

A Special Evening
Jul 2017 • Couples
We had the advantage of being escorted by an experienced visitor to the site and the opinions of other reviewers. Thus we took a picnic and our Prosecco, arrived in ample time, (allowing a speedy exit due to proximity of parking) and enjoyed a pleasant hour or so admiring the beautiful lake side scenery.
The stage setting is a bit of a blot on the landscape, but required if you want to sit 3000 people down in the open air to listen to opera.
Either our hearing is more acute, or the La Boheme performers were better able to project their voice, because in row 21 we had no difficulty enjoying the performance. The seats were OK but a cushion would certainly have helped during the 3 hours we were in the theatre,
We had no recourse to use the facilities during the show so suffered none of the inconveniences voiced by other reviewers. However the timing of the intervals was longer than advised.
I would not hesitate to recommend a visit on a balmy summer evening to listen to great music and enjoy the collective appreciation of the audience. However I would recommend that visitors heed the advice and comments offered by others, to make their visit the more memorable

Disappointing, not good value.

We paid 80 euros for our tickets for each opera performance. The whole experience was a disappointment for several reasons.
1. The plastic seats were OK for an hour's sitting, but the operas lasted well over 2 hours, sometimes 3 and. after that length of time, became rather uncomfortable. Take a cushion!
2. The sets and costumes and lighting were impressive, but there was no amplification of the singers at all, meaning that they were hard to hear, especially the ladies.
3. The facilities were not designed to cope with the number of patrons attending the performance. There are nowhere near enough toilets, resulting in some ladies having to queue for the whole of the intermissions. The toilets are also not well maintained and show signs of overuse.
4. The refreshment facilities are similarly not sufficient to cope with the demand. During the intermission, a long queue also developed at the only refreshment sale point. In the foyer there is ample space for several sale points, indeed some sellers could also set up one the edges of the main auditorium, but arranging this is obviously too difficult.
4. The car parking is not at all efficiently organised. In many places departing spectators have to cross lines of departing vehicles which is unsafe and causes some drivers to become impatient. It's an accident waiting to happen.
On both of the nights I attended I noticed the auditorium was not full - perhaps the points I have raised above have detered others from attending.

Pluses and minuses but overall a good experience.

This was central to our short break to Lucca so we were determined to enjoy ourselves. Location is a bit out of the way so I would recommend getting the shuttle bus. They operate from Lucca. We picked one up in Viareggio. Cost €30 return for 2. Drops you right at the main entrance. Well worth doing. Dressed for the occasion although this is not compulsory. A couple of cafe bars on site but not as you wold expect with a large venue. I would eat before you arrive. Quite breezy _i would recommend a scarf and lightweight jacket. Sound quality really not consistent and does spoil the performance. If you are going for an overall experience this is okay but opera fans would find this very frustrating. We sat in row 20 and I think anyone behind us would miss quite a bit.
