Interesting property in a beautiful setting. Parking and shuttle bus very efficient. Guides not allowed inside but excellent information given personally outside. Beautiful woodlands and nice benches to sit on for picnics. Thoroughly recommend.

An absolute gem! I’d been meaning to visit this recent NT acquisition for a while and it was well worth the wait! The house seems to have grown out of the landscape and the interiors are just wonderful for us arts and crafts fans! Top marks to the lovely guides and a big shout out to the lady driving the shuttle bus when we visited today (18.09.21) My ticket was for the 19th! My silly mistake but she sorted it for us so we were able to enjoy a great visit a day early! Well done NT for looking after this house and for having simply delightful volunteers and staff!

Stoneywell is a gem in the NationalTrust. We loved the Arts and Crafts. Especially the pictures in the nursery.
The guides were friendly and knowledgeable. As there was no tea room a guide recommended a perfect pub in a nearby village. Well done her.

We visited this small National Trust property to break a long journey from south to north, as it's conveniently situated near the motorway. Booking is essential, even for NT members, because the property is small and there is a shuttle bus required to take visitors the (short) distance from the parking place to the grounds.

The house is a family home and is less grand than a traditional NT property. It's built in the Arts and Crafts style which means it is designed to harmonise with nature, curving natural around the contours of the land. There isn't much space inside so volunteers give you a brief history of the house outside before you look round. I liked this as I was able to discover the property on my own and at my own pace.

The interior is one of the best I've found - it is styled as from the 1950s, so more modern than many NT houses. It had a really homely feel and I could actually imagine myself living there which isn't the case with many historical places. The rooms are well laid out and interesting. My parents, who grew up in that era, particularly loved seeing brands and styles they remembered from their childhood so it's a great nostalgia boost for people of that generation.

There are pleasant grounds with woods and some planting although no formal gardens like you might find at more traditional NT houses.

The volunteers are all very friendly and helpful and the shuttle bus service is very regular and quick so don't be put off by that.

I'd visited the gardens and woodlands before, first time in the house. The volunteers are just fabulous at this property. They engage lovely with the children all of them and so helpful and knowledgable about the place, nothing too much trouble at all.

It's probably only a 2-3 hour visit maximum, could be done in less. No cafe now, so did miss having a cup of tea which was a shame. But everything else spot on, gardens, staff, toilets, house.

Please visit and support, you will enjoy it.

Finally got around to visiting Stoneywell after a long time of wanting to visit. As members and living within half an hour it has been on our list for a while.

It is clear from the website that prebooking is required, even before Covid and further reading explains the well organised shuttle bus operation from the car park.

The lady on duty at the car park was friendly and informative as were the mini bus driver and lady at the gate at the property.

We went on a showery day which probably didn’t show the property in its best light but it was still impressive.

The cottage itself is the highlight of the visit, being quirkily built into the rocks. The exterior is pretty, the interior is very intriguing. Worth noting that the stairs are very steep in places.

Special mention for the ladies on duty at the house who were unable to do a guided tour due to restrictions but who spent time giving us a lot of information while we were in the house waiting for the rain to slow. There was a lot of knowledge particularly about the generations of family who lived there.

We had a little wait for the minibus back, although there would have been no objection to us walking back down the the lane to the car park.

We’d certainly like to revisit when the weather is better for views and also for a picnic or similar in the grounds.

National Trust owned property. Designed by local architect, William Gimson, who used the landscape to create a “cottage” tucked into the rocks.
Situated in the deep Leicestershire countryside, not far from Bradgate Park.
Volunteers assist with visitors.
Reduced facilities at present, eg refreshments on sale, due to Covid.
Toilets and car parking, and the opportunity to picnic, tour the cottage and gardens, at pre booked appointed times.
A shuttle bus operates from the car park.
The National Trust website gives full historical information and details.
A stunning property with a very interesting history.

We visited Stoneywell yesterday we are local and walk in this area on a regular basis. We have always wanted to see what was behind the stables that can be seen from the road. We were not disappointed the house is absolutely beautiful really enjoyed seeing how well it had been preserved. The gardens and woodland were very pleasant to walk around and the views across to old John at Bradgate Park were breath taking. It’s a place we intend to return to in the different seasons. Thank you to the staff who were very welcoming and gave us plenty of information about this beautiful property.
