- Mikerg86Wetherby, United Kingdom37 contributionsAmazing place to visit near WhitbyWe visited here while staying in Whitby. We didn’t ride on the trains but did see a few of them pull into the station. Excellent views of the trains from on the bridge. The station looks amazing and the kids were excited about it being the Harry potter station. We had a walk on the moors above the station before having an ice cream and drink from the cafe. Nice little gift shop to buy some train or Harry potter giftsThank you for a magical review - we're very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Goathland Station.Written September 22, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 19, 2023

Working station, if your lucky you may see a steam train. Check the timetable outside. Parking is £3.50 for a day. - BigJeff L1,435 contributionsOut of season VisitI visited this famous station out of season, so I had the benefit of just myself and two other people on the station. Of course there were no events, trains or facilities open but I still got to enjoy what was on offer. Deemed to be uneconomic, the line through the station was closed to passenger traffic in 1965 as part of the Beeching cuts, before reopening in 1973 as part of the wonderful North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The station is very well maintained and it really is like taking a step back to another era......and of course there is the nostalgia of Heartbeat & Harry Potter.Thank you for a lovely review - we're very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit and we hope to see you back when we're open.Written March 26, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 19, 2024
- Mais79 contributionsNice stop on our journeyWe stopped off whilst travelling between Whitby and York and loved driving through the Moors to get there. Was fun to see the heartbeat filming locations and train station which I imagine would be made better by visiting in season when the steam trains are running! We paid £4 to park for not very long however toilets were free and it seemed the charge went into the Moors national park so didn’t mind too much. Although worth noting we did see that you can get 20 mins free parking outside village shops if you are going to buy a souvenir or something to eat there which would be ideal if you are just stopping for a quick trip like us.Thank you for your review - we're pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit and we hope to see you again when we're open.Written March 26, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 23, 2024
- BraindamagedbaronNewark-on-Trent, United Kingdom1,425 contributionsGoathland appreciationI have zero interest in Heartbeat, the TV show. I saw five minutes of it once and decided I'd rather gnaw my own foot off than watch any more. I've never been so bored in my life. Still, I do appreciated a lovely old building and some nice countryside. Fresh air is an attraction too. And so, we passed by Goathland and popped into the area for a look. It's beautiful, without a doubt. The station is a attractive old building set in wonderful surroundings. You'd be stone hearted not to like it there. A truly gorgeous part of the world.Thank you for a lovely review of Goathland Station. - S6243PPrichardgHornchurch, United Kingdom201 contributionsSteam how it used to be,Goathland Station has retained all its charm and is really well kept by the volunteers who look after it. Goathland village is a short uphill walk and retains some of the tv programme Heartbeat. It is a flashback in time especially when a steam train comes in to the station on its way to Pickering or Whitby. Even nice to watch the day go by with a coffee and a snack. We always visit when we come to this area.Thank you for a lovely review - we're very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Goathland Station - it's always nice to hear from our regular visitors.Written August 20, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 19, 2024

Food is fresh and tasty and the inside was clean and inviting. There's access fo those using a wheelchair (it's a slope down into the tea room), and there's a decent amount of room to manoeuvre inside too. Would absolutely recommend (particularly the cakes!)Thank you for a lovely review of Goathland Station tearoom - we're very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit and we hope to see you again.Written September 3, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 27, 2024

During a visit to Heartbeat country, we visited Goathland Station where the North Yorkshire Moors Railway provided a service. The station is lovely - preserving the feel of its long past. We were fortunate that two steam trains came to the station while we were there for our short visit - magnificant. One was pulling at least 12 coaches whilst the other was pulling the older teak (?) carriages. As single track is used, we watched as the token was exchanged between.
Really impressed all round.

A bit off the beaten trail in Yorkshire, but worth the trip. The drive to get here is beautiful through the moors and the kids enjoy seeing the sheep so close. The town has really welcomed tourism and is easy to navigate. There are two great big car parks and it's a nice walk to the station. You'll want to wear good walking shoes but not your nicest as sheep poop is everywhere you look and step. The station itself is pretty as a picture and crowds gather to get the first glimpse or picture of a steamer coming up the hill. If you have a Harry Potter fan this is the great pilgrimage to "Hogsmeade Station." If you don't have a Harry Potter fan...this is an adorable train station with a cute town planted up a hill! It's worth your time either way if you're just getting out a bit. The train rides right up to the beach in Whitby.

We’d bought a ticket for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and this was where we get the train from.
Lovely station, lovely tea room and reasonably priced.
This station is a great place to see steam engines and you can get up close to them. Worth a visit.

Been here a couple of times during our visit to the area and today we were treated to the steam train in the station.
The train driver was more than happy to have a chat and was very friendly.
Well worth a visit just check the train times.

Took the train from Whitby to Goathland as had to visit the station as were Harry Potter fans as well as wanting to see the area on a steam train. The whole experience was lovely, you can hop on and off the various stations and your ticket lasts a year if your back in the area. Beautiful scenery along the way

What a wonderful experience. We met a lovely photographer who wanted to take a 60s themed shoot. Your wonderful staff couldn't have been more helpful to us. Especially the Station masters. So genuine and helpful. To have two Steam Trains come in at roughly the same time helped immensely. I'd also highly recommend the Cafe and the Victoria homemade sponge was beautiful. We'll definitely be returning. We just wish we'd thought to incorporate the Station masters in the shoot but it was impromto and not thought out properly. Always next time guys Thank You.

The station is well worth a visit if you are visiting the moors and specifically Heartbeat country.
The sights and smells bring back the days of steam and the volunteers do a fantastic job to maintain the authenticity of the railway and station.
It’s a shame we didn’t have time to ride one of the trains, but we will certainly do so some time in the future.

Being an avid Heartbeat fan, it was a great experience to visit this lovely station and to see a steam train waiting to move on to Whitby. I asked about tickets but it was full sadly. nevertheless it was a lovely experience. We waited there for the train to pull out which brought back all those fond memories. Thank you.

I’m staying in Whitby this summer can I get a train from there to the station easily?
Written December 12, 2022
You can get the seaside express to goathland station. This is a pre booked train only. It’s an historic train often steam, just like Harry Potter but when we used it used it was a diesel replacement due to fire risk during last summers drought. Lovely relaxing way to travel and see the countryside.

Hi. My friend and I want to make a plan to go to Goathland station but there may be no trains running in February 2020.
Aren’t we able to go into the station and take some pictures when trains don’t run?
Please let me know if you have the answer. Thank you.

Buonasera,
Grazie

Hi Tom277 where going on the steam train in a few weeks and want to get off in goathland ,how far and steep is it to walk into the village?
Written June 1, 2019
The walk up the hill from the station is steep, but its only 100 yards to the pub & garage

I want to come here with a group of 35 Potter fans. Can we get onto the platform? Is there room for a coach to park? Would we need to book ahead for the caf
Written June 14, 2018
You will all get onto the station easily and there is a coach and car park nearby. I don’t know about the cafe booking

Hi
Can you let me know if I can book a short steam train journey from Goathland to Whitby Bay? If so, how much will it cost and can we get a return ticket? It's for a special occasion for my mum who has never been to Whitby bay before or on a steam train so I thought for a fantastic day out, we could spend a short amount of time of steam train to Whitby bay and then spend most of our day at Whitby bay, then at around 5pm get the steam train back from Whitby bay to Goathland train station where we can collect our car and drive home back to Manchester. We want to experience the steam train but not spend the majority of our day on it because the main highlight for mum will be spent at Whitby bay and we only have 1 day to do this which is Sat 2 June mum's birthday.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Scott

What a lovely idea. Check out the North Yorkshire Moors Railway website for timetable, fares and pre-booking. I think you will be able to get a train from Goathland and return later for about £20 return pp. Be aware that the station car park at Goathland is small and a bigger car park is nearer the village about 10 mins walk away some of which is on a hill. Have a great day out.

Can someone please advise me on how easy parking is at the Station here in Goathland? We will be visiting the area and looking to use the train for the day.
Written July 17, 2017
Park up the road in the village, make sure you park in marked areas or car parks, not on grass as they are real tough on illegal parking!!!
