Believe it or not I was the first ever reviewer for this amazing waterfall back in 2011! In August 2020 I was back, retracing some old steps. Age has caught up with me slightly and I found the walk and climb a bit more strenuous this time but it was worth it. A gorgeous sight within lush woodland. A personal favourite.

If you have the chance take the short walk from Goathland to see this fantastic waterfall. Suitable shoes are must.

We took the footpath route down from the road on the west side. (Outskirts of the village and slightly further west than the Mallyan Spout Hotel). It’s a steep descent following a grass path and wooden steps down to the west beck. Along the river side and then across wooden bridges crossing the river twice before reaching the waterfall. It’s very steep and slippery, quite treacherous in places. It was also very muddy and boggy after the recent rain. Fortunately it was a quiet day when we visited (mid week in October) with not many people along this route or at the waterfall itself. Once at the bottom it is picturesque walking through the roofs by the river. The waterfall is pretty too.

We have visited Goathland before but not stayed over and after reviewing our options, decided it would be a good base for a couple of days exploring the various walks and beauty of the local area. It’s clearly very popular, especially at present and after lots of checking online we managed to book to stay for one night after the hotel had a cancellation a couple of weeks before. They have really worked hard to make the hotel covid secure but also not lost sight of ensuring they provide good hospitality so you can enjoy your stay and put any worries you may have to the back of your mind. The staff were friendly and welcoming and you can see why the reviews are good and people return here. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. We ate in the restaurant for both breakfast and dinner. The food quality was excellent with hearty portions on both occasions. The bar prices were also reasonable and there’s plenty of places to sit and enjoy a drink both inside and outside of the hotel. It’s a much more welcoming place to enjoy a drink than at least one other well known spot in Goathland! We even found time to grab a quick sandwich in the bar before we set off for home and the guy serving was very friendly and cheerful. The staff and management really do deserve praise for providing a safe, enjoyable and homely atmosphere in these difficult times. Best wishes to them all for the weeks and months ahead and we hope to return when we can in the not to distant future.

Its a lovely walk down to the waterfall, there are some slippery rocks closer to the main falls so need good shoes. Worth a walk down as the waterfall is very pretty
