Zen Ruins
Jun 2021
A bit out of the way, but a great stop. The main castle is extremely photographic and the grounds are enjoyable to walk through. Everything is well marked and we opted out of a guide. You can also access the Sian Ka'an Biosphere from Muyil. We're glad we did this before we went to the Tulum Ruins as these are much quieter.

Something the check out on your way to the 'floating experience.'
Mar 2020
Our main goal is this area was to do the 'floating experience' at the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. The Muyil ruins is a convenient stop on your way to the floating experience.

After seeing the Coba ruins, this is not quite as exciting. But because it is less popular, there will not be as many people around.

We wanted to do the floating experience first, to ensure we got a boat before any crowds got there. We also wanted to float down the canal by ourselves. Mission accomplished on that goal. And since government allows a limited number of boat tours per day, I would suggest you do the boat tour first before the ruins.

When we were done in the area, there is a nice sit-down restaurant practically across the street called Restaurant Chunyaxche, where you can pay a lot less for food than in town.

Taking cheap local transit is very much possible for this half-day trip. you can take Collectivo, ADO, or public bus. Public bus is the cheapest. Just wait on the concrete bench across the street from the above-mentioned restaurant when you're ready to go back to town.

Quiet and worth a visit
Feb 2020
We went on a guided birding tour around Muyill and the Sian Ka'an park.
Compared to the other more famous Mayan sites this park was very quiet and it gave you time to look at the wildlife and admire the architecture.
Small Mayan village, temples and a board walk through the forest to the lagoon. A steep watch tower gives impressive views and boats to hire to explore the water ways.
Plenty of birds to be seen plus Howler monkeys, lizards etc

Best ruins in tulum
Jan 2020 • Couples
We had the place all to ourselves as we went early. Beautiful secluded Jungle setting and great staff. Complete opposite of the Tulum ruins. Took the board walk into the Sian Kaan reserve which starts behind the castle and that was even more amazing. Paid 1000 pesos to take the boat ride/canal float tour which was also fantastic. Expensive morning but it was all together the highlight of the trip. Go early tho. 8am.

Quiet , un-touristy opportunity to see Mayan ruins .
Dec 2019
Walked through the jungle after the Sian Ka'an experience. Small charge to walk on the boardwalk to the ruins - 50 pesos or so . The ruins are well worth seeing - because there were no other visitors it was very special . However there were lots and lots of mosquitoes . Don't forget the spray !

Old Maya Structures
Oct 2019
We headed south through Playa Del Carmen and Tulum to the ruins at Muyil, about 90 minute drive. Not many tours go past Tulum so it was not busy at all. Take bug spray as you’re walking through the jungle to view the ruins. The mosquitoes were nasty. These are very early Mayan ruins so aren’t as large or as well developed as the more popular Tulum or Ek Balam. Our guide, Carlos, was extremely knowledgeable of the ruins, the Mayan culture, building techniques and way of life.

Fantastic if combined with a lagoon/canal ride
Aug 2019
We've now visited on 2 separate occasions as part of getting to the lagoon (an AMAZING experience by the way and well worth the time and money). The pyramids are small and easily visited, The restoration is decent but not great. The nature walk (a separate, nominal charge) is interesting and features a small fire tower which children love to climb. Given the incredible number of pyramids and cenotes in the general vicinity this was never a top choice to visit without the lagoon. Instead if pyramids are your "thing" go to Tulum (pretty but over-rated if you've visited the main pyramids in the Yucatan) or Coba (really great). We will certainly return as it is virtually the only way to get to the boats which take you to the lagoon/canal area. Otherwise we wouldn't. It's really easy to find" Just follow the highway from Tulum to Muyil. It will be on the left just before Muyil. If you're in Muyil you've gone to far!

Great way to spend a few hours
Jul 2019 • Couples
We had arrived in Tulum the day before and fancied something close by, I’d read a blog covering all the options so we were prepared for all the charges. The ruins were simple compared to the big sites but inexpensive, the extra fee to enter the bio sphere was also small and was an interesting walk through the jungle along a boardwalk including the vista from the tower part way along. For us though the highlight was the boat trip - yes, it wasn’t cheap but we were out for over 2 hours with just us as passengers. We skimmed across the lagoons and the guide looked for as much wildlife as he could see for us. We had a cooling 30 minute swim part way through then finished with the 40 minute float along the channel - an experience like no other. The last boat ride back to the dock left us feeling exhilarated.
