Kalpathy temple famous for its radhostalvam. The chariots are enclosed inside iron gates and one cannot view them if we do during other seasons. Ancient inscription about the temple history is available. Calm and good atmosphere when we visited it during evening

Kalpathy is the oldest agraharam or Brahmin Village in Kerala. From my father six generations lived here and the house still exists as Josier Home.My great grandfather was a royal palace astrologer.
Kalpathy temple is the landmark of the village. The seasonal chariot yearly draws many.
Besides the temple one can find shops by Brahmins selling pickles, chips, vethal or dried vegetables etc.Their main attractions are rice vedams and mahani or sarsarapilla roots that are unique to the Brahminic villages surrounding Palghat.
A nostalgic journey discovering my roots was a great joy.

This temple is situated in Kalpathy Village, Palakkad. There is Kalpathy River, adjacent to this beautiful temple. Annually there is a Procession during the month of November. Kalpathy is a typical Brahmin Agraharam, where majority of them are Brahmins (also known as Palakkad Iyers) in South. This place have been declared as heritage village by Kerala Government. One should never miss visiting this place, if one is in Palakkad.

The unassuming facade is belied by some beautiful architecture of the inner buildings. Unlike temples of Tamil Nadu that has ornate stone sculptures, these have intricately carved wodden structures that are not so ostentatious. The most curious thing here was the "dwarapalaka" that was a lion elephant hybrid which I have not seen before! Defintely worth a visit to soak in the atmosphere and see some typical Kerala architecture.

I had been to this festival during Nov 14th to 16th. Nov 2014. It was really traditional, colourful and more enjoyable! Conducted by 4 different temples of Kalpathy village in Palakkad, comprising of 6 chariots (cars) spread over 3 days! The enire village participates and people who had been living in Kalpathy and have hence shifted to various places in India and abroad for jobs and other purposes, come during this festival to reunite with the tradition. Its a sight to watch!

Kalpathy Temple is located in Palakkad, Kerala and is famous for Chariot Fest ( Car Festival). This Ancient temple is also known as Half of Kashi. This temple and surrounding Tamil Brahmin's villages ( Agraharam) had been constructed during 14 th Century as per the history. This amazing village has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site recently. Foreign and domestic tourists are visiting this Heritage site after that.

The Present day Kalpathy refers to the collective name of the cluster of Tamil brahmin settlements in Palakkad.
The main streets (known as Agraharams) are New Kalpathy, Old Kalpathy, Chathapuram, Govindaraja Puram, Vaidyanathapuram are located in the banks of "Nila"river.
Other satelite Agraharams are Lakshmynarayana Puram, Chokanatha Puram, Ambikapuram, Kumarapuram and Shekharipuram.
It is believed that the local king, H.H.Shekhara Varman of Palakkad, gave tamil Brahmin migrants permission to settle here 6 centuries ago. There are 18 Agraharams in and around Palakkad District.
The main temple of Kalpathy is known as "Kundu Kovil" of Kashi Viswanathar (Lord Siva) and Vishalakshi ( Godess Parvati). Other famous temples are Kshipra prasada Ganapathy Temple (12th Street) , Manthakkarai Mahaganapathy Temple, Laksminarayana Perumal Temple (old Kalpathy), Prasanna Mahaganapathy Temple (Chathapuram), Varadaraja Perumal Temple (G R Puram), Vaidyanathar Temple (V N Puram).
The Annual 10 days Car Festival known as "Kalpathy Theru" is conducted in the month of November. Major temples in the Kalpathy vicinity take part in this festival.
Tourists - local, from other Indian states and foreign countries visit this annual event.
Recently, the Government of Kerala has declared these Agraharams as "Heritage Village" to preserve its antiquity and culture.
Residents of these Agraharams are well educated and have been in the highest echelons in public life. The residents are vegetarians, have flair in vedas, fine arts, classical music, literature, dance and politics. Some of the well-known personalities of yester years are Sri.Mundayai Rama Bhagavatar(Carnatic Vocal), Sri. Palakkad Mani Iyer (Mridangam), Sri.V.R.Krishna Iyer (Judge), Sri. Ramanatha Deeksithar (Vedic Scholar), Sri.C.M Sundaram (State Minister).
Currently, the new generations from these Agraharams are all spread across the globe, leaving behind their parents here. These Agraharams are mostly resided by the elders of the society. Youngsters would visit their native villages during the Annual car Festival, though.
