Marimo moss balls are small balls of green algae that have the velvety texture of moss. I had never heard of them and wanted to see what they looked like and Lonely Planet said that they could be found at this museum. As a bonus...More

I wasn't sure about this museum until I stepped inside. What an impressive collection of specimens. Everything was labeled and the museum was very well done. It is worth a quick 30 minute stop.

A museum dedicated to a bird lover, the layout and architecture is modern, and the cafe serves good food. We enjoyed learning more about the birds we have seen in Iceland and whether they inhabit the island all year or are migratory. There is also...More

Great location and an interesting museum. I highly recommend the museum café. The view on the lake is wonderful and the home made food is great and good value. I had the rye-bread with smoked artic char. Very tasty and not at all expensive.

We visited the Bird Museum, which has a good collection of Iceland birds, but we were more interested in viewing birds on the lake. The area outside the museum/cafe area is one of the best viewing spots on the lake. There is a telescope inside...More

If you are a birder and would like to see what all of the Icelandic species look like, this is a must see spot. Also large lakes next to the museum are perfect habitat for many species of birds. Well worth the time to visit.
