A special shout out to the local French Veterans
Sep 2019
In September I was able to visit the cemetery for a ceremony with local French veterans who recognized Americans killed in liberating the Bretagne region. Their level of commitment and and sincerity to the war dead was moving in the extreme. According to the head American from the ABMC at the cemetery, such ceremonies are common, and the ABMC works frequently with these veteran organizations.

As per the usual of these cemeteries, the grounds are flawless, and maintained better than NFL stadiums. (As they should be) The layout is gorgeous and allows for one to wander and truly take in the immensity of the sacrifice represented by all the crosses and stars of David.

I am a history lover, and WWII dead have a special place in my heart, so if you are similar to me then plan on at least 3-4 hours at the cemetery. If not, you can see the whole grounds in 1-2 hours. Parking is limited, so on busy time such as anniversaries of local battles and the liberation of northern France, then you might have a hard time parking, but the grounds keepers can help point you to alternate locations.

With deep passion I recommend this place. If you are in the area, stop by. If you want to plan a trip to the region, it is worth it as you can visit local areas such as Mount St Michel or Dinard.

Very moving

My uncle is buried here. Be sure to request the special service they perform for any direct descendants visiting a grave site. The staff will fill the letters with wet sand from Omaha Beach, place an American flag and play taps. All very moving

I pray that my grandchidren will understand the significance
Jun 2019 • Couples
Of course this is a moving experience - impossible to comprehend the numbers of guys who died so that we can be here, free.

It worries me that my children and my grandchildren will not fully understand the significance of this sacrifice.

The cemetery is beautifully kept (as they all are) and that is the very least that can be done to honor those brave men.

Memorial visit

Large American war cemetery located on the outskirts of St James. A sobering experience but rewarding to pay your respects to the brave souls who sacrificed their lives in WW2. Beautifully maintained and despite its solemnity and interesting and rewarding experience.

tranquility for reflection
Aug 2018 • Couples
Whenever we have visitors, we take them here as it is closer to our house then the one at Omaha beach. No matter how many times we visit, we are always struck by the peace and tranquility. The grounds are well kept and are a credit to those who maintain them. As you wander around, reading the names on the headstones, there is time for reflection on who those men were, what they did and what might have been. A must visit.

The Compte's Soldier
Jun 2018 • Couples
After staying overnight at Compte Regis' Chateau Du Bouceel nearby, we visited this cemetery, where we laid hydrangeas at his soldier's grave site.

We had previously visited the Omaha cemetery, plus other cemeteries on the Western Front, and we found this one to be as meticulously maintained as the others.

Our Heroes Rest In This Place
May 2018 • Family
Brittany American Cemetery is part of the American Battle Monuments group of Cemeteries, Monuments and Memorials. It sits on 28 beautiful acres of land . Here lie 4,408 American dead, 498 Missing and 97 Unknown Heroes. There are 21 sets of brothers. The Cemetery is lovingly and immaculately tended by French groundskeepers.

If you visit, parking is across the road from the Cemetery. Stop in the Visitor Center to pick up a pamphlet and talk to the Superintendent if you have any questions. There are clean restrooms around the back of the building. Then begin your walk to the Chapel.

We have visited most of the ABMC Cemeteries in Europe several times. The Chapel at Brittany is one of the most beautiful we've seen. We visited a couple of days after Memorial Day Weekend, so the chapel had many lovely flower arrangements from the ceremony. Upon exiting the Chapel, there is a set of stairs that takes you down to the graves. This is a quiet, serene place to contemplate the sacrifices made by these men who helped save the world from oppression..

When traveling in Europe, make a point to visit one of the incredibly beautiful American Cemeteries and pay your respects to those who gave their lives so that we could live ours.

Touching
Sep 2017 • Couples
This memorial cemetery is closer to Mont Saint-Michel and isn't as popular as the one at Omaha beach. Because of that it is generally less crowded and that might be preferred for those wishing to pay their respects to the fallen.

For those driving, pay attention to your GPS Sat-Nav if something like this "Cimetière militaire américain" is programmed in. When I selected it, it took me to a farm area and wanted me to turn into some farmland that obviously wasn't correct. Set it to get you into Saint-James and then follow the signs instead.

A very worthy memorial
Jun 2017 • Friends
We found this cemetery purely by chance on a road trip. The grounds are very well tended, amongst the hills of Brittany. The church set within the grounds has wonderful displays giving a brief yet informative insight into the events that unfolded from D-Day until the end of the war. It is well worth the visit, no crowds just peaceful and reflective. We will remember them
