A great hike for the adventurers, this very active volcano does not involve any technical equipment but almost requires that you overnight on Acatenango, a dormant volcano linked to it by a saddle. When I went, the volcano was spewing lava and pyroclastic debris, rumbling through the night. The wind was almost throwing us off the landscape, but the views were amazing, stretching as far out as lake Atitlan and Agua volcano. And being in the presence of such force of nature is unforgettable. You will have to hire a guide and as I say, probably will have to sleep on Acatenango, but it is worth the climb! Humbling and thrilling!

It is a long hike to the top but totally worth it. You pay a nominal fee at the bottom and an extra fee to continue up the volcano once you reach a certain point. The guide is with you the entire time and helps you learn things along the way. We saw flowing lava and felt the heat reverberating off of the rocks. It was a life changing experience to be that close to that level of power. We also roasted marshmallows from the lava heat...it was hot!!!! You must go to this place if you are in Guatemala. Bring lots of water and food/snacks.

A gorgeous view from our Air B&B in Antigua. The last night we heard this deep rumble we were not sure if it was an explosion, fireworks or what. In the morning, the volcano was throwing columns of ash.... Just magnificent !

We had a private guide from my school who took us on a spectacular adventure! Not only did get to hike through pitch black terrain but sat under the milky way until the sun came up then Fuego yawn with smoke and a little lava! The reserve around the volcano is lush and enchanted. We also saw one of the lava rivers from the last eruption. Fantastic. I would love to do it again!!!

As we were traveling from the port to Antigua, our tour bus passed through the are that was in the path of the most recent eruption in 2018. The roads are still being reconstructed and it was very sad to see the devastation.
All day long Fuego kept sending up puffs of smoke! It is truly awesome!

Powerful, frightening volcano. You can see the red glare at the top of it at night. So sad and devastating what occurred in June of 2018

Yeah, sure, it is an inconvenience when there is activity originating from this volcano, but heck, this volcano has been active for, like, a really long time.
Eruptions have been documented since the Spanish Conquests in the early 16th century.... and repeatedly documented since then, so it should not be a surprise to have activity in 2018.... where damage is done to bridges over river and stream valleys and accessory roads built in close proximity to the actual volcano.
The more direct road from the cruise port to the UNESCO site of Antigua gets closed or subject to long delays in traffic, which affects tourism. That is the major gripe.
Otherwise, it is beautiful to look at, causes atmospheric conditions that provide for comfortable human habition and contributes to the rainfall that makes this the tropical jungle area that it is.

Little known to the outside world, this volcano erupted June 4, 2018. We drove past the devastation which was 7 miles from the volcano and you could see where the lava flowed and the rock and ash devastated the country side. There were make shift roads and bridges being used. The main road to and from Antigua is closed at 2:00 pm every afternoon as they are still searching through the ruins. We had to detour through Guatemala City. Very sad.

We stayed at La Reunion resort and had beautiful clear views of this very active volcano. It was ash bursts during the day and lava bursts at night. Playing golf on its slopes was a once-in-a-lifetime highlight.
