This hike up 740 steps is so worth it! The views are breathtaking and very surreal! I booked a trip last minute and am so glad I did. What a great day.

Looking down from the top of the Peñol is incredibly beautiful. You can see the rivers, the town, and the mountains that make the panorama so picturesque. It's quite a climb to get to top, but it is perfectly doable in about 20-25 minutes.

Wow this place was totally amazing I underestimated the size as we drove up at once we got there and did the stairs 740 and all I was amazed at the view at the top and it shows how scenic the vistas are in Colombia!

If you're in Guatape, you HAVE to visit La Piedra, the views are absolutely breath taking (as you can see from people's posted pictures). The climb itself doesn't take long but can be quite tiresome but it's easy to rest and even the most unfit...More

A small hike up 700+ stairs on a large monolith. It's a quick work-out that rewards you once you get to the top. The views are breathtaking. When visiting the Penol, you should also take the time to walk around the town of Guatape. The...More

The price is a bit steep by Colombian standards ($18,000 CP per person) (About $6.50 USD) but completely worth it! My boyfriend and I visited in May so it wasn't very busy. The stairs are a fun workout (if you're familiar with O'ahu, it's like...More

We recently took a day trip out of Medellin and visited the charming village of Guatape and climbed the Piedra del Penol. The climb was tremendous fun and really not so tiring despite the 735 steps. The sweeping views were spectacular.

HUGE MUST SEE in Colombia. Well worth the trip up the 675 steps to the top. Make it all the way up to the top and you wont want to leave.....the view is breathtaking. The food at the bottom is "ok" but who cares.....

The views are great but not worth 18.000 COP. If you are budget-travelling, don't let the people making you believe that it is expensive but worth. It isn't.

Hi! My friend and I want to visit El Peñol while we're in town, but we don't want the all day tour. We don't have much more time here in Medellin so we'd like to squeeze in as much as possible in one day... Like the coffee plantation. Is there transportation to the rock without a tour? If so, how do I go about getting this transportation and around how much? Thank you!

You can go by bus and it will cost approximately 12.000 pesos (one way, per person). Got to Caribe metro station, where the North terminal is located. From there take a bus to "La Piedra" (it's a 2h ride). From la Piedra... More

Hi Alex, I'm going this July and my boyfriends family keeps talking about how amazing this is going to be and I'm terrified of heights, and I don't know what to do. Tell me about the stairs are there handles to go up and down? You said it's not so bad to come down? When I get to the top, I won't go near the edge or nothing I'm so terrified my fear makes me want to jump, so I have to stay quite away those that don't understand the fear don't get it.

Worst part is going up the stairs. Certain parts were a little too open for me however you are never in any real danger as the protective wall is high so its purely a irrational sensation those who have fear of heights will... More
I'm planning to visit Medellin in March and would love a recommendation on a day trip to Guatape and el Penol. Does any one have a recommendation on a specific tour that isn't terribly expensive? Or should I just take the bus? Thanks!
