In june 2014 when i saw this pond beside the road, I was amazed.
Frozen from edges and center, Emrald water parting center & edge make it a completely different sight.
Just Awesome!!

Its a long drive from Keylong, but worth it! The lake is just below Baralacha and the view is stunning! Supposed to be the highest lake in India.I was lucky to have absolutely clear weather.

Suraj tal is located amidst the gorgeous Zanskar mountains .This is the second highest lake ( 4883 m /16020 ' ) in India ,which is also 21st highest in the world . Starting from Leh at dawn (5 am ),I was travelling through the NH 21 which is also known as Leh Manali highway . The entire path is so beautiful and is with a totally different view from the usual greenery of the Himalayan routes in Kashmir or other states like rest part of Himachal Pradesh , Uttarakhand ,Sikkim , Arunachal etc.The bare mountains are multicoloured ones on the upper Himalayas . The unique view of these mountains spread up to Darcha where Darcha nullah meets the Bhaga river .The first view of the sacred Suraj tal as you barely cross the Baralacha La pass where the three routes Zanskar , Lahoul & Spiti and Manali meet , is simply breathtaking although the beautiful blue lake is so small as only about 4 kms. in length .The lake is fed by the streams coming from Baralacha La . And the 65 kms. long Bhaga river comes out of this lake meeting the river Chandra ( coming from Chandra tal near kunzum la pass in Lahoul and Spiti ) at Tandi near Keylong to create the river Chandrabhaga which is known as Chenab after entering Jammu & Kshmir .The view of the surroundings is ice clad mountains, which is in contrast with that of the serene blue lake . In winter that is after the month of November to April every year, the lake remains covered with snow. The temperature comes down to as low as minus 27 degrees , the highest temperature during summer may go up to 13 degrees . The Tal is skirted around with small loose pieces of stones and boulders forming the slope . The trek route is very enjoying . It starts from Zingzingbar from the Manali side .The last part of the trek route ( 30 kms. ) is steep and rough from Patseo . In summer biking is possible through the NH 21 ( Manali Leh highway) . One can take a dip in the sacred Tal as it is said one can get rid of sin by doing that .
Manali Leh bus service by Himachal Pradesh Govt. as well as private operators are available in summer months . No locality is there in this area . Hence no accommodation is available . So you can enjoy the view of the Tal en route only, if you choose a bus trip for the journey .Usually in this trip, the night rest is in Sarchu .

This is true, you may never wish to leave this place. Best time to visit is when ice in whole lake is melted to water. Rich blue clear water with that few patches of ice on adjoining mountain gives it a panda look :) If whole lake and mountain in covered in ice, it will not give this look. There will be ice every where and you will not be able to differentiate between lake and mountain. Best time to visit would be during June and July. You may wish to stay but air is thin and cold wind blows continuously so do not stay longer than 10-15min. Road next to lake is narrow and slippery full of broken stones. You have to conquer this place to enjoy this astonishing view. This is really a moment of lifetime.

3kms Short of Bara Lacha Pass and 65 kms from keylong on Leh Manali highway.
It is not a big lake but still big enough to thrill you for a lifetime.

A glacial lake which is at an altitude of around 16000ft is an eye blower. If you are travelling from leh to manali..it comes after baralacha la pass. Nearest town is keylong of Himachal pradesh where you will get accomodation and puncture also. Before keylong comes Jispa which is famous for tent safaris. For best communication it is recommended to carry a bsnl postpaid sim. Suraj tal is along the national highway only. So no need of derouting. Best time to visit is june because the lake will also not be frozen and you can see snow around it. Check out the images below.

On the way from Keylong to Leh, its a quite place, we couldnt get down here as it was really cold , however it is a scenic lake but is a small one. A stopover for sometime would be more the enough.

Its extremely difficult to describe the beauty of this place in words. Its so scenic that for a few moments you forget the driving stress of the manali-leh road. When you reach this place, just stop, get out of the car and just enjoy it...
