Beautiful and interesting - Go for the annual Bergfest
Mar 2019
I went a few years ago with my wife and son. I was fiirst there in 1979 for the Bergfest (Altdahn Castle Festival). The castle has some restoration but is mostly a ruin. You see where thousands of feet wore down the stone stairs over hundreds of years. It is a short walk up a gravel path to get there. The view from the top is breathtaking. A few miles up the road in Merzalben castle, also a ruin. I also recommend seeing Clausen Site 59 and Liemen Site 67. These are old bunkers where the US Army had a top-secret base for Nerve Gas storage, Now a beatiful forest. There is a park in nearby Hinterweidenthal with the Teufelstasch, a rock formation called the "Devils Table". Got to try Pirminator beer from the Park Brewery, best (and most) that I've ever had.

Epic Castle
Jan 2019 • Family
This castle was EPIC. There are so many things to see and little rooms to explore. The ruins are extremely well maintained and our kids had fun exploring everything. It is slightly dangerous if your littles are daredevils, so keep a close eye on them.

Altdahn ruin consist of three castles: Dahn, Grafendahn & Tanstein. They are sited next to one another on the rocky ridge.
Built sometime around 1200 to 1232. Destroyed many times and rebuilt. The ongoing restoration is in progress.

Big castle with lots of great views and hidden treasures!
May 2017
The Altdahn Castle is one of the best castles we visited in the region. The views are amazing and there are many little hidden areas to climb and discover. Not very busy so you feel like you have the place to yourself!

Romantic

Altdahn castle is easily accessible by car from the downtown following the signs. There is a small parking under the castle, just about 500 m far from the entrance.
I spent nice 2 hours discovering well preserved rooms, climbing to the towers and enjoying beautiful views to the valley. And couldn't stop taking pictures. I truly recommend visit.

Towers, Turrets, Traverses, and Tunnels

Fully explorable ruins of castles wait for hours of fun. paths, stairs, ladders, bridges, and railings are set into the stone to allow access to the centuries-old structures. There are handouts and panels with interpretive information, signs and labels, and a seasonal gift shop and restaurant. Where most castles say, "don't touch," this is a true hands-on experience. My family so enjoyed the time here and you will too.

Great views
Feb 2016 • Business
Romantic ruin overlooking Dahn - not too much of a climb. The best views are accessed by clambering up a narrow ladder to the top of one of the surviving towers. Great for adventurous kids and adults. Not much shelter if wet other than a nearby small cafe.
