Beautiful little town

What a beautiful little down. We really enjoyed taking the little walking loop around the town and looking all the murals.

A hidden gem near Bologna
Nov 2019 • Couples
I just found it by accident while
Looking for vineyards near Bologna. This is. Beautiful village with murals painted all over the walls with a castle at one end. They have very quaint stores , cares and even a nice restaurant. In my opinion it is a must visit destination. You only need a few hours to do it well.

One-of-a-kind experience

A perfect half-day trip, about 40 minutes from Bologna. A little know gem to tourists. Dozza is a tiny town but very nice, peaceful and feels very clean. The people in the various shops we went into were very friendly. But the murals are so beautiful, clever and the cover nearly all the walls of the town. We loved this place!
P.S. it's rather hilly so it might be a little strenuous for older people, those with disabilities, etc, but you can drive through it in the car and see everything very easily.

Some beautiful paintings
Sep 2019
We spent a few hours in Dozza one afternoon. The weather was pretty grey and miserable. Dozza was so quiet it was quite eerie.
We walked around the streets looking at the different paintings on the houses. It was a really interesting mix of art work by many different artists.
Most of them had the year they were painted so it was interesting to see the way the older ones had worn over time.
If you are near Dozza do stop and have a walk around.

Worth a quick stop
Sep 2019 • Friends
Dozza is a cute little town and it makes for a great afternoon stop. We strolled through the streets admiring the artwork on the walls for a good half hour. The place is calm and there are very few tourists which was perfect after visiting Modena and Parma.

They were filming a documentary about the murals when we visited so not all streets were accessible. Regardless, it was a nice place to see.

Another variation on the meaning of paint the town.!
Nov 2018
Just a 40-minute drive from our Air B&B in Bologna is the medieval village of Dozza, nominated one of the "Most beautiful villages in Italy". Vehicles cannot enter Dozza, so once we parked our car in the free car park, we strolled uphill through the charming mural-lined streets of the medieval village of Dozza. We allowed a couple hours to walk around the village to check out all the different Murals painted on the house and shops walls. There are lots of cool painted arches and alleyways so be adventurous and wonder around. There is a 500-year-old medieval castle sitting at the top the village overlooking the Bologna foothills, well worth a visit.

TIP: Go early to avoid the traffic and tour groups in Summer.

Do make a visit when in the area. Dozza is called the city of art and rightfully so. It is a tiny town where parking is free.

Murals to promote tourism

Dozza is a sleepy town just 40 min from our hotel in centro Bologna. I was told by Salvatore of our Bologna BB to visit there.
We would have arrived sooner but the expressways are choked with heavy commercial traffic at 11:30. It seems that in northern Italy heavy trucks do most of the intra-country transferring of materials and produce.
Vehicles cannot enter Dozza. From the entry we walked and briefly viewed the many murals on the facades of the buildings and house. Murals of all shapes, sizes, colors, and content. There isn't a consistent theme. I understand that Dozza, like many of towns in search of resurrection I have already visited, did this to attract tourism.

Quaint and Charming

During a recent stay at Palazzo di Varignana, I arranged through the hotel an excursion to Dozza to see for myself the beauty of the murals.A 20min short and pleasent drive from the resort, we entered the pictureaque town and was delighted with it's storybook feel. It is such a unique place that you really must experience it for yourself. Murals, murals everywhere!! Fanciful ones, whimsical ones, all from different Italian artists, give Dozza a special quality. Not to mention the lovely cafes and shops throughout the town, which can be walked in 15min or less. If ever in Bologna or it's neighboring areas, take a detour to experience this hidden gem!

Disappointing!
Apr 2018 • Couples
On our drive to Bologna, we stopped to see the little village of Dozza. Dozza is known for its festival of the painted wall, which takes place every two years. During this festival, famous national and international artists paint pictures on the walls of the houses. Frankly, it was a big disappointment! The paintings on the walls of the houses were, for the most part, very modern. (Think framed art works instead of whole walls.) However, the town was quiet and charming, and we had a great lunch at Ristorante La Scuderia on their enclosed porch in front of the Rocca di Dozza, which is a Middle Ages Fortress, with original towers, prisons, and justice room.
