Really beautiful lake that also allows you to swim in or rent a boat (swimming area is payed and indicated). So you can claim to have been swimming in a volcano ;) But its just a really nice and friendly place. Everything with measures in place due to Corona to keep people save.

A beautifull maar (shallow vulcan lake) where you can take a swim (under supervision) ... we had a very nice afternoon in the (cold) lake water.

There are 3 lakes (Maren) connected by a hiking path, The crater of the first lake is quite steep and high, on top there is a panorama tower, the top offers a wide splendid view over the lake region. The walk around all three lakes take about 2 hrs, you need a reasonable condition to walk the whole track. Along the way there are a couple of restaurants which serve nice local dishes. Worthwhile and interesting activity.

We spent a few days on the camping site (as fas as I know, the ONLY camping site right on the EDGE of a Maar - the others are 100+ metres away from the 'shore'). Narrow and steep approach with terraced camping pitches. We walked round the 4 Maars. My wife cannot walk very well, but we found enough seats 'en route' to make the trip enjoyable! We also drove round to the small airfield overlooking the Maars and took a 45 min flight in a small 3 seater private plane. We asked if we could fly over the Nurburgring racing circuit, which the pilot did. Absolutely the highlight of the visit! Loads of small cafes around for a break. We also found some beautiful 'wood carvings' (done mostly with a chainsaw) as re-entered the village. The water in the Maars is so clear, it's almost invisible.
Also worth visiting is the information board alongside the main road, overlooking the Maar, which explains how the Maars were formed and shows the 4 separate areas of the individual Maars.

Despite the wheater not being all that good it was very relaxing to visit this beautiful volcanic lake. I can highly recommend this and can only imagine how beautiful it must be at dawn or dusk. Next time I will bring my camera

The weather was not the best. It rained most of the first day we were there. But still went out hiking around 2 of the volcano creator lakes. The town of Schalkenmehren, Germany right in the creator. It was worth the drive to see this.

Great place to walk with lots of Cafe's close by. Excellent for family swimming on warmish days. Peddle boats available. It is also worth walking around the village

Schalkenmehren is the ideal starting point for a walk around the 3 Maare. You can stop half-way at the Waldcafé or have 'Kaffee and Kuchen' in the Café Maarblick in Schalkenmehren.
