Norman Castle & Centro Storico Citta di Mesagne
Quaint small town in Puglia close to Brindisi but away from the tourist throngs. Meander down the cobblestone streets of the sleepy Centro Storico. Some buildings have been carefully restored and turned into small B&B’s.

This town is amazing and I cannot understand why it doesn't feature on the tourist guides.
First there's a modern town but inside that is a walled older City and within that there's a Norman Castle.
the castle isn't massive but has great history and I strongly recommend you find the computerised information point that tells you all the history of the castle and its many many uses.
then you can walk around the walled City of tiny streets and a host of great architecture.
A real hidden gem.

Or visit to the castle was made more enjoyable by the man at the ticket office who told us the sequence of rooms to visit, gave a detailed description of the tomb and showed us a video of the cisterns used to store olive oil.

My friend is from Sannicandro di Bari. My wife and I were there and he gave us a tour of the castel. It's good if you like history. By the way Sannicandro has a rich history for the maintain of Apulia to protect Bari.

You can see most of this castle from the outside with the moats and best views. Inside are the offices of the architectural folks and a relatively small museum. But some of the capitals and the archway into the interior of the castle from Frederick II are really important and great to see. When we went there were two exhibitions, one of photos of the castle in the 19th century (really dilapidated) and some of the renewal in the 20th century. The other was plaster casts over 100 years old of the best stone sculptures from throughout Puglia. There is a multimedia presentation which you have have them play in English, French, German or Italian. It is on the history and quite professional.

Majority of the castle is closed due to renovations. Basically you can visit 3 rooms. The 1st one is a cinema where a documentary is presented about the castle. We spent there some time, and heard the films in 2 languages what we do not speak. Maybe with more patience you have a chance for other versions. No timetable of the different versions is presented clearly. In the 2nd room replicas of stone carvings found in the neighbouring region of Italy are on display. The 3rd room contains old photos of the castle and some old broken pottery. There is no treasury, original furniture, collection of arms, or other original findings on display. You have no chance to climb up for a view or look out from the building towards the surrounding city. The toilets are temporary - they are OK for a summer festival but not for a museum. The entrance fee is 3 euro but at this state of the site it should be completely free for everyone.

We parked our car not far from Porto Nuova with a 5 minute walk to the Castello. We were greeted at the entrance where we decided to pay the entry fee as the castle appeared to be well maintained. The usual entry fee of 3 euros was reduced to 2 euros as part of the first floor was not open. We were given a 30 minute guided tour, in Italian but we got the gist. There are a number of rooms, all renovated, and downstairs the old olive oil cisterns. The museum area is fascinating with well curated relics recovered from the local area. There is also a video presentation in English which is worth sitting down and watching after you have viewed the castle and museum. If you are within easy driving distance of Mesagne this is a worthwhile visit as there are also a number of impressive old churches that can be viewed. Make sure that you time your visit to avoid the midday closing time for lunch and siesta. There are clean toilets at ground level and also upstairs. There is also a small tourist information office within the castle.
