About
Fundació MONA was created to put an end to illegal trade, exploitation and abuse of primates in captivity, to report their real risk of extintion and to support their protection in the wild. Close to Girona, MONA has established one of the few animal sanctuaries in Europe that offers a home-for-life for chimps and other rescued primates, where they are able to live in natural surroundings. MONA is a place in which people become inspired, wish to further understand them, and develop a greater respect for them.

Great and educative
May 2021 • Family
Great place and facilities. The guide was great telling us all about the place. There's a little shop and parking space. We need to raise awareness in this issue. Apes and animals need protection.

Authentic real chimp and monkey sanctuary
Sep 2019
It's not a chimp show and it's not a petting zoo (obvs), it's an educational tour which explains some of the stories of the chimps and how they came to live here. Most are pretty sad stories highlighting the calous and ridiculous way that these primates are often treated. But the story ends much more positively as these chimps have found sanctuary with lots of stories of recovery from trauma and social development etc. Thankfully laws are changing to protect these animals albeit slowly and these folks are also part of the positive changes for these chimps. The tour starts with a video which is followed by a short tour of the facilities with explanations of the animals and how they are cared for. We are a family of 4 with 2 children 7 and 9 years old and we really enjoyed it. We asked loads of questions throughout that were answered really knowledgeably. Thanks a lot Ali!

We have lived nearby for over 5 years and have only just found the foundation. I would recommend more of a push to ask all visitors to leave reviews and share on sites like tripadvisor and social media as it is a great place to visit. People don't mind at all being asked especially if it helps the foundation. And it only takes a couple of minutes to leave a review.

Thank you so much for your opinion 1A_Tsang!! As you say, for us is so important that you do a review about us and the tour. The tours are necessary for people to know more about the ilegal trade and the consequences of it, and you, the visitors help us in the mantaining of the animals and the center. We have rescued primates, some of them, with traumas because of their past and here we have good keepers that take care of the animals and help them to become chimps and macaques again and live in peace, the rest of their lives. Thank you so much for your visit and for help Fundació MONA to make it happen!

We booked a 1.5 hours talk with a very informative and helpful guide from Leeds. You select which language tour you wish to book. Well worth a visit.

We are glad that you liked the tour and that you not only had a good time but also learned of the situation that still happens with primates nowadays. Thank you so much for coming and making it possible!

Just ok for little kids
May 2019 • Family
The adults found it very educational, we learned a lot and had a very knowledgeable keeper walk us around. We had 3 small kids with us (3, 2, infant), the tour was above their attention spans. The monkeys can get agitated if the kids are acting up. If you have very active small kids this might not be the place.

Thank you for your opinion! We are happy to hear that you enjoyed our keeper's explanation and knowledge. As you say, the visit can be a bit rough for little kids, that's why we recommend that children be at least 4 years old. We invite you to visit us again once the kids are older!

Muy monos los monos :D

It's really interesting to be able to watch the great work of the staff and volunteers and the advances that these primates have made since they were brought to the refuge. Will definitely visit again, when the new installation is up and running to see how the center has grown enabling it to rescue even more apes from captivity.

Fantastic visit!
Feb 2019 • Family
We visited with our two small children and we were very impressed by the whole centre and the tour. We speak Catalan so there were no language issues, however, lots of the team and volunteers spoke English. Highly recommended. A real privilege to see these primates up close and being looked after so well. The kids really enjoyed preparing the morning snack for the chimpanzees and it’s a great way to teach them about the importance of treating wild animals with respect.

You have to go there!
Sep 2018 • Couples
We are partners of MONA FUNDATION more than a year ago and we were so happy to visit them for first time!
You have no idea how amazing has been the experience to meet this Chimpances, specially because they were rescued from "bad human hands" all of them were living a miserable life and now have the chance to start again. ALBA did for us the tour, you see them free, in the nature, and was beautiful to stay looking at them,as they had contact to humans before they are curious and look at you a lot... Alba was very friendly, speaks very well english and explained us all the story from them, abosuletely recommend it!!!! It is a place for rehabilitation and learning a lot about them.

Unfortunately not a place for the younger ones
Nov 2017 • Family
The objective is noble and their hearts are in the right place, but this is hardly an activity for the younger ones. We are all about conservation and against animal mistreatment/confinement, so we decided this would be a perfect fit for us. We booked the family tour+workshop option thinking it would be targeted at the younger ones. The video they showed at the beginning was too cruel for younger kids, not at all appropriate. In addition, the explanations were way too long, tedious and unentertaining for a child, as were the stops where kids were expected to stand still and listen. We could see other parents with young kids were also having a hard time keeping them interested. Our daughter wanted to leave and we could foresee it wasn’t going to get any better, so we ended up going home mid-way the first stop. We get the cause – it’s not a petting zoo and it shouldn’t be, but if they want the younger ones to enjoy and learn, there are far more engaging ways to do so. I think it would make a great activity and learning experience for young kids if they had a child-friendly version (less talking, less visual violence, centred on activities, with guides that understand young children’s minds, attention span and interests, etc.). We would be happy to return if we had that choice as we totally support the cause.

Thank you very much for your visit and opinion. We are sorry to read your words. Our family visit with workshop is designed for a family audience and is aimed at children between 4 and 10 years old. Children younger than that age can accompany their families on visits, but obviously they will not enjoy it or understand the message we are trying to convey because they are too young. We look forward to welcoming you some other time. Thank you very much.

Private tour of the mona sanctuary
Oct 2017 • Couples
Excellent tour in English. Very informative tour of the facilities plus a great chance to get photos of the monkeys. On the tour they tell about the history of the animals that you see and tour finishes with a short film of how the sanctuary began. There is a nice shop where you can buy cuddly toys, books, pictures etc. My wife was in a wheelchair but there no issues getting round. My wife really enjoyed being very close to the monkeys. A must do tour if you are in Girona
