I have heard stories of the Bayernhof Museum and thought I would give it a try while up in Pennsylvania. I was not disappointed at all. This was perhaps the best music museum tour that I have been on in ages. The staff was quite entertaining with the history and stories surrounding the museum mansion. The music was quite lively and entertaining, especially with all the music boxes playing in each room. Well worth the $10 and two hour tour. I will have to go again to pick up on everything as well.

My wife made the reservations to go here and I didn't really know much about it going in. WOW - what an absolute find!!! I'm fairly hard to impress but this automatic music machine museum absolutely floored me! The guide (Jim) was fantastic in his story telling and intimate knowledge. Just when you thought going into a particular room with all the antiques / machines could not be outdone, you go into the next which somehow tops it. Then where the tour concludes is absolutely mind blowing. There is so much more I could say and photos I could add but it would ruin all the enjoyable surprises that await you. All this for $10/person and free parking! Trust me don't think twice about it - just go - you will absolutely not be disappointed!

How I never previously heard of this amazing museum is beyond me. A mansion housing a world-class collection of musical instruments and machines. Add a quirky millionaire that designed a home to fit his eccentric tastes that he wanted to share with the world and you have a very informative and very fun place to tour. Highly recommended!

What a wonderful experience! Two and a half hour tour that will amaze and delight the visitor. I would suggest not researching too much about the museum before you go, since the surprises are the best part. Our group was of all ages and we all really enjoyed our tour. Would love to return, since so much to see and learn.

If you enjoy unique tours, put this one on your "must do" list for Pittsburgh. Labeled a music museum, it is that and MUCH more! As its website says, the 19,000 square foot house (completed in 1982 by Mr. Charles Brown III, a Pittsburgh entrepreneur) showcases his rare collection of automated musical instruments and music boxes. His collection is incredible, but the home is as well! From the phenomenal vistas of the Allegheny evoking images of the Danube, to one delightful surprising room after another, the tour led by Mr.Tony Marsico is well worth the $10 fee. Taking you through a maze of rooms chock full of fascinating musical wonders, he skillfully brings "Chuck" to life, whom he personally knew and worked with doing restorations prior to Mr. Brown's death in 1999. Mr. Marsico's depth of knowledge is astounding, and his dry humor makes for a very memorable 2+ hours. Secret passageways, 11 bars, several kitchens, a winding cave to the wine cellar and back up to the indoor pool and 10' waterfall, several rooms designed for entertaining, a remote-controlled jacuzzi in the master bath (one of 8), a rooftop observatory, murals depicting scenes of Germany...the list goes on and on. Located in a residential neighborhood, the tour times are restricted and done by appointment only, so you must call ahead to schedule. Individuals or small groups (limited to 12) are welcome, as are children over 5, however I would say the tour appeals primarily to adults. Don't miss this one if you want to experience something out of the ordinary!!

My husband and I found out about the Bayernhof from watching KDKA's "Pittsburgh's Hidden Treasures", and that title can be used to describe this amazing house. Although the directions to the property are a little sketchy, once you arrive you'll find it well worth the trip. The view is spectacular, the guide was knowledgable, and the house is indescribable. My husband didn't enjoy the demonstrations of the music boxes as much as I did, but we both thought the house was amazing. Charles "Chuck" Brown, owner of the house, seemed to come to life through the many stories told during the tour.
Each room is unique in its own way, from furniture to architecture to accessories. There are hidden staircases, a board room, fireplaces, wet bars, an elevator (not in working order), a game room with a "stained glass" ceiling, two kitchens, a formal dining room.....I could go on for a long time.
The ending to the tour is set up perfectly. I won't spoil the surprise; I'll tell you to go take the tour for yourself. Some words of advice: the property is not handicapped accessible, I didn't need to use the restroom but I didn't see any public restrooms, and it is definitely not for younger children. The age limit is 12, but I can't see most teenagers enjoying it. Admission was only $10 and the tour lasted about 2 hours. Make sure to call in advance for reservations. I called on a Friday night and my call was returned the first thing Saturday morning. Group size is limited to 12 people.

Please move this listing back to Pittsburgh!!! Having it in O'hara is like listing the Statue of Liberty outside of New York City because it's on Ellis Island. The Bayernhof is a major Pittsburgh aattraction!

This museum is a little out of the way, sitting in a residential community outside of the city, but well worth the drive to visit. I was expecting a museum full of music boxes but it is much more than that. This was a man's home, an eccentric man's home, and you get to see all of it. Not just the amazing music boxes, player pianos and musical contraptions of all shapes and sizes, oh no. You get to see and hear how this generous man had fun in this amazing house filled with secret passages and a man-made underground cave and shared the fun with his friends. I truly recommend this tour to anyone who would like to see a place really unique. Our tour took 2 hours.

This was formerly a private home that is now a" music",museum. Each of its many rooms can be described as wondrous and unbelievable. You think that nothing could be more awesome...until you step into the next room! Run, don't walk, to this amazing place.

My husband and I visited the Bayernhof Museum on Friday, June 20, 2014, while visiting Pittsburgh for a long weekend. This museum was by far our favorite Pittsburgh attraction! Not only was it well worth our money ($10/person for a 2.5 hour tour), but it was fun and fascinating. Neither my husband or I are particularly interested in music machines, so when we read about the museum online, we weren't sure how much we'd enjoy it. However, the museum is MUCH more than music machines. We both enjoy interesting and unusual homes, and this museum certainly features that. There are lots of surprises throughout the tour that keep you interested from start to finish. The way we described it to friends after our visit was if Gatsby had really lived (and lived in the late 70s, early 80s and been fascinated by German culture), this might have been his house! We definitely recommend this museum to anyone interested in architecture, unusual homes, music, or just being nosey and seeing how someone with a lot of money lived! If you plan to visit, call a day or two beforehand to set up an appointment for a tour. You won't be disappointed!
