Great, old lighthouse
Sep 2020
The old lighthouse was a great attraction even late at night from the street. It is also visible when the ship enters Skandinavienkai.

The oldest lighthouse in Germany.

The old Travemuende lighthouse is 31 meters high and is now on 8 floors a maritime museum which gives an idea of the history of lighthouse techniques. The tower was destroyed in 1534 by Danish troops. It was replaced by the present tower in 1539 which was built by Dutch workers. In 1827 the upper part of the lighthouse was destroyed by a lightning strike. The lighthouse was listed in 1922 as a technical monument. The view from the top is very good.

Oldest in Germany, good view from top. Shame they make you pay to walk up...

So this is apparently the oldest lighthouse in Germany. Interesting to visit for this reason, and you get a good view of Travemünde and the area from the top, but it's a little disappointing that you have to pay to go up (there isn't much in Germany you DON'T have to pay for...).

We came here in a raining day with our little daughter. This is the nice place with great sea views. You need to climb the stairs, but it's not difficult.

Interesting and good views from the top

Happened to see the old lighthouse as I was walking along the sea front, saw people looking out from the top and decided to visit. Very good value at 2e and the chap on the desk is friendly and chatty. There are landings on the way up where you can see various maritime information and artefacts (it also means you can catch your breath on the way up!). I didn't count the steps but it must be around 150. You get great views from the platform round the the top - especially over the harbour area. Well worth the effort.

Well maintained old light house in this city of Travemunde. The nice gentleman who takes care of it is well travelled has been all over the world himself. Well worth a visit

old lighthouse in charming port city

We chanced upon this monument advertised as the oldest lighthouse in Germany during our afternoon outing to this seaside town not far from Lübeck. After being warmly greeted by the lighthouse keeper and having had a look at the multimedia maritime exhibit, we decided to go up to the top.

Our climb of more than 140 stairs was rewarded with a truly breathtaking view of the river and bay - we even managed to glimpse a historic ship making its way to the sea. We could clearly see the highrise Maritim hotel - which blocked the view somewhat and which was supposedly the reason for the lighthouse being discontinued a few decades ago. While we didn't make the tour offered on Sundays, we really enjoyed our visit, with the climb then justifying refreshments from the nearby Niederegger cafe.
