On This Island - Karen Is The Manager
Oct 2020
What's in a name, right? Well - in this instance: you get quite a quaint boutique on a hill overlooking paradise. Funny thing, too - it's a bit of a last stop on 340 coming or going. Because that's what 340 is - one way: coming or going.

It's probably at this point that we should should share that this was our first trip to Maui - and that we found the gallery entirely by accident. And not the one in Lahaina: anyone can wander by that one. In any event - we had planned on going to the Olivine Pools (which - we did & are also worth stopping for but by no means should anyone ever get in that water for how dangerous it is). We figured to make a day of it by travelling north-west along 340. And if you would like to do the same yourself - you won't be disappointed. Literally every turn is a photo out of a travel agent's brochure where you think "Nothing is that gorgeous". Keep your shutter finger ready.

Turns out - the remoteness of the journey takes you by what becomes something like a mythical 'mirage' after wandering through what seems like land that hasn't been disturbed since the Precambrian. As you wind up a hill (literally either way) - you see a few signs touting a little shop. What you find is pristine farm-house converted to a beautiful gallery. Literally everything about the spot would have you believe you'd pulled up to a boutique on any metropolitan square. Oh and there's the farms below. All of it feels uncanny - and quite truly turns the journey of finding Karen's gallery part of the allure: you have to want to get there.

Inside the gallery - Karen keeps shop: and enjoys talking about the various pieces she has & the adventures she takes to find the wares which passers-by can see. From original art, to jewelry, keepsakes & pottery ; there's literally all the local art & handcraft you could hope to find - be it as a gift or something to hang on the wall. She even has restrooms - which after going a few hours without anything like running water isn't a small thing. Hell she even has ice cream - seriously. You can get a few orange bars & sit in some of the chairs outside & wait for someone to pinch you to wake up from how idyllic it all looks.

Point blank - Karen is a kind character; and this trip along 340 to this shop feels like legitimately where you go to get lost. Intentionally. You know - where you get 'post-cards from paradise' from that family member you hear about but don't ever see. Go here - on your way back you'll realize how that old Corona commercial skipping cell phones like stones wasn't that crazy after all.

Great Store & Adorable Clothing
May 2019 • Friends
Karen Lei's Gallery is in a quaint little town. Her store has adorable & beautiful tops, that you will definitely want to buy one or more. There is also other gift items for the house or great gifts to take home for yourself or family & friends. I would recommend checking Karen's Gallery out.

We’ve Never Left Without a Purchase
Feb 2020 • Couples
Even though the drive is a little nerve racking toward the end we go every time we visit Maui. Beautiful Hawaiian art makes the best souvenirs at gifts! Very diverse in offerings and prices. They have a second and more easily accessible location at the Ka’anapali Shores. It’s a bit smaller but convenient.

Great stop in West Maui loop for art and gifts, and coffee.
Jul 2019 • Friends
We stopped in Kahakuloa and had a coffee after browsing the originals and prints. Great place for break on the loop around the west end Maui. Also stopped down the road for Kahakuloa Christmas berry honey. Just honk if there is no honey at the stand.
We did not find our liking at the Kahakuloa site, but did the next day at the Kaanapali Shores location the next day. Go to both locations for an original that is reasonably priced, not a FINE art gallery ($$$$$).

Trip around north end of Maui
May 2019 • Family
They added a food trailer to their parking lot in March, 2019. They have added give tables and chairs that provide beautiful views of the village from which you just drove from if coming from Lahaina. They offer everything from loco moko to egg sandwiches, hamburgers, salads, to Roselani ice cream in either cups or cones. Despite the remoteness of the location, prices were VERY reasonable.

Great place to stop and Wonderful Staff with True Aloha
Oct 2018 • Couples
I loved stopping off at this gallery on my road trip. It was a great opportunity to enjoy Maui. I loved the various kinds of art and trinkets available. It was a super place and only one real sweet lady was working. She smiled and was willing to help me select a gift for my mom to take back home. I was impressed with the amount of attention she gave me considering how many people were in the gallery! I couldn't catch her name but it was a real Aloha moment for me. I will be sure to be back. By the way, my mom loves the gift.

Worth the drive past Wailuku. Beautiful scenery, very twisting and narrow in some parts

Excellent selection of Maui local art, from jewellery , ceramic, wood, glass, and Maui-made soap.Very friendly service, and so much to chose from for gift giving.Tried to do the Waihee Ridge Trail, but weather in this part of Maui is very unpredictable. Instead went to Karen Lei's Gallery and so glad we did. Continued around the coast, and stopped at Olivine Pools, Nakalele Blowhole , around to Kapalua. In Lahaina stopped for lunch at Star Noodle. Worth finding and waiting in line for a table -you wont be disappointed.

Great place to stop on this desolate road
Oct 2018 • Family
Stopped here on Sunday Oct 14th 2018. Grounds were well kept, shop was nice with an assortment of trinkets and artwork. We browsed for a bit then I approached the lady at the counter to ask about a price for a piece of artwork hanging on the wall. I said "hello, how are you, looks like time for a snack yeah?" The worker was sitting down eating an avocado. She replied without looking up at me and said; "it's not a snack, it's my lunch!" Then she proceeded to eat here lunch. This really turned me off and I was no longer willing to purchase anything from this gallery. I'm in the customer/member service industry and know what it takes to keep clients, and this lady was rude. If you are the owner and read this review, I would look to replace or educate this employee.
