This winery tour lived up to its high ratings. We toured as a family and received a personal tour of the vineyards (the most valuable wine producing region on earth) from a daughter of Arnelle and Bernard. We learned tons about burgundy and the wine making process. This was a great visit. Happy to strongly recommend.

We had a wonderful wine-tasting at this family-run winery. We thank Melissa (one of the three daughters of Armelle and Bernard) for the visit. We hope to return for a vineyard tour or a truffle hunt, or at least just to resupply our wine!

We were walking in Burgundy with MACS Adventure, who booked this visit. We’re so glad they did! Armelle the owner took us personally to visit some of their prestigious ‘terrines’ around Vosnes-Romanée. It was amazing to see first hand what makes these vines so special, to learn about production, discover our personal preferences and try their own truffles. Thanks to all the family.

We made an appointment for a tasting and visit to the cellar by email a week or so prior to our visit. When we arrived the owner was outside and showed us to the cellar where we met Victoria, who led our tasting and tour. She was very well informed, spoke English beautifully and was very friendly. This is clearly a family-run place, very charming history. We tasted 6 of their wines for free and end ended up buying 4 bottles. This was a great first stop for us.

I recommend this stop to anyone passing through Vosne-Romanee. Thank you!

Do not miss an opportunity to meet with the Rions while touring Burgundy.
Kids loved the truffle hunting, and grape juice tasting.
Bernard and Armelle are great hosts, wine tasting and truffle tasting were a treat.

My wife and I reserved for a truffle and wine tour with Domaine Rion and we had such a lovely afternoon. We were hosted by Armelle, who was extremely welcoming and lively, and her passion for the family business really shows. She loaded her truffle-hunting dogs into the van with us and we took a beautiful drive through the vineyards and into the forest to find some truffles. The forest area was private and planted many years with their own trees. It was quite a unique experience and we learned some things. We then went back to the Domaine and into the cave to observe their wine production and do some tastings. We got to taste some fine red wines including 1er Cru, Grand Cru and also a 25-year old Grand Cru which was a treat. Armelle also provides some fresh baguette with sliced truffle which was a nice finish with the wines. All in all, this was a very nice experience...a little something different, and I would highly recommend it!

We visited DABR (🙂) in early April 2018 on our 2 day visit to Burgundy. The Domaine itself is right on D974 and easy to get to. We were very warmly welcomed by Alice and another family member. They gave us a tour of the caves and explained their wine making techniques and the various plots the family owns. This was followed by a 6 wine tasting ranging from Aligote to their 1er Cru. The wines were very good. Although we were tasting young wines they displayed great nose and were silky smooth. Nice legs and excellent pallet. Each one stood on its own with different complexity and pallet. We purchased a few bottles and had Alice autograph the bottles. An insider tip: they have a village wine which is designated Village due to technical reasons but is from the neighboring plot to DRC La-Tache’. At €40 compare it to upwards of $3000 for La-Tache’. We bought other memorabilia and got information on their wine shipment to USA, which I will be utilizing. I saw an earlier comment which spoke about a broken bottle. I want to say that I packed the bottles in wine skin and packed it in a hard case suitcase. After Burgundy I drove to the Alps, Italy and Switzerland before returning to Paris and flying back to United States. The bottles made it back intact without any issue and are now in my Wine Cellar safely maturing 🙂. I look forward to shipping their wines and future visit when I travel through the region again.

The Positive:

Took the VIP tour at 25 EUR. The VIP tour included a 20 min walk and explanation in their production and cellar. Friendly guide. Tasted four wines. In general, the Domaine was friendly and welcoming, but compared to other tastings in Bourgogne a little overprized (other highly “rated” Domaines - mainly in Cote de Beaune - offer a similar short visit to the cellar and tasting of 10+ wines, for free).

The Negative:

Fundamentally I do not write negative reviews on TripAdvisor. But I have an issue with what happened. Following the tasting I bought a bottle of Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 2015 for 48 EUR. I travel around France (as I live here) 3-4 times a year and taste and buy wine and always carry a carton, foam box, and bubble wrap, in the car. First thing I always do when returning to the car is wrap the bottle in bubble wrap and carefully place it in the carton (who has a divider, so that the bottles cannot touch). This has worked perfectly the last 10 years – no broken bottles at any point. At the hotel I carried the carton to the hotel room and placed it on the floor. When I returned from breakfast (45min later) a bottle in the carton had broken leaving wine all over the hotel room floor and on my clothes, that was on the floor. To my surprise the bottle from Domaine Armelle et Bernard RION was broken. All other bottles from other Domaines in the carton were absolutely fine. No one else – I had the room key and no cleaning whatsoever was done during the 45 min – touched the carton at any point. I have thoroughly discussed the matter with the Domaine who essentially claim I, or someone else, have been handling their bottle wrong and that it is my fault. No intend to compensate. My family produces wine (albeit in a way smaller scale and likely with lower quality bottles) and we do experience bottles who break (maybe 5-10 a year) due to fault or weakness’ in the glass itself and we always replace these. A bottle breaking once sold is uncommon but does happen. Like with every single product a consumer might buy. Let me emphasize again that ALL other bottles from other Domaines in the same carton were perfect (and perfect once I returned to Paris). The Domaine has essentially refused to acknowledge the issue. I am lead to conclude that their bottles are either of a less good quality than their competitors, or that the bottle had a fault. Therefore, if you buy, and you do transport their wine in any way, be VERY careful ! And do not expect any compensation if the product you buy is faulty. 48EUR for a bottle might be pennies for the owners of this domaine, but for me as a consumer, it’s expensive for one bottle. What a shame !

Dear Benjamin, Thank you for your comment, the reviews of all our customers matter for us. As you mentionned you chose the VIP tour and we are glad you enjoy the visit. To correct your description, it's an one hour tour with the winemaker around the winery and in the barrel cellar. The visit always includes the tasting of 5 wines including our Grand Cru the Clos de Vougeot. Like other wineries, we also organize free tasting for people who want a overview of the winery and our products but without the tasting of the Grand Cru. We were sorry to hear that the bottle you bought, had been broken in your hotel room. As we explained to you by email: we use a premium quality glass for our bottles and we never had that kind of problem. All wine shippings include insurrance in case of damage on the wine during the transportation. However when a customer carries a bottle with him outside of the winery, then the product is under his responsability. We hope to receive you again in our winery to discover our other products or visits. Best regards, Rion's family

We did the wine tasting here today with Alice as our host. She was excellent and so was the wine. We learnt a lot about the type of wine (mainly Pinot noir) from the region and how the labelling and wine industry in France differs from Australia. All in all a great experience, we left with 1/2 a dozen bottles all reasonably priced, it's a shame (or maybe a blessing) that the shipping rates and taxes to Australia are so high, otherwise we'd have left with a lot more!
