The highest dune in Europe, a unique landscape with an incredible panoramic view over the ocean, forest and Arcachon Bay but also and more importantly, a living, natural space that needs to be looked after and protected. Since December 2007, the Syndicat Mixte de la Grande Dune du Pilat has been working to protect and preserve this national piece of heritage that belongs to us all. From the top of this giant (109 meters high, 2,7 kilometers long, 500 meters wide), you can see many remarkable sites of the region.

Quite a unique nature creation, have never seen anything like that before. Breathtaking views of the ocean and the dune itself. A perfect family day out in any season. I would recommend wearing wellis!

We stopped for a few days, and are definitely coming back. Cant wait to learn how to parapente. Arcachon is a cool town nearby, and deserves to be explored more. Highly recommend.

A mix of an infinite sand mountain, forest and sea. That day it was raining and windy and we still made it to the top. We went in November and there were no stairs. So we came back all muddy, sandy and soaked but enchanted by the beautiful view despite the bad weather. Obviously on a sunny day the view... More

This was the high-light of the day for me in Archachon...go early, as early as you can to beat the crowds. There are a few steps to the top of the main dune, and it's possible for most people with no mobility issues to make it. The view is stunning... If you are fit fit fit and have the time...one... We were in Bordeaux and Arcachon for two days each for the first time and without too much of a plan. Travelling with 13 & 15 yr old daughters on their October school holiday...they noticed the sign and said that the Dune de Pilat (Pyla, Pylat and many more spellings!) were famous across France... so we went. Late morning on... More

It is a massive sand dune. About 2.7 km long & a touch over 100m high (varies slightly). Allegedly the highest or second highest in Europe depending what you read. Before you get to it is the car park (pay for parking but nothing more to pay for the dune)) then several souvenir shops & eating places. Plenty of spaces... More

The only essential cost is for the car park. I think you get half an hour free but if you want to climb the dune, you need a bit more time. The only problem is not the cost but the fact that you have to use a card to pay and it doesn't tell you until you arrive at the... More

We decided to climb up in the sand instead of the stairs… can be a challenge for some - the stairs were very busy (early afternoon). Quite beautiful view from atop - overlooking the Bassin d’Arcachon. It is free to explore the dunes… parking for a little less than 2 hrs was 1 euro. Max is 4 euros. You will... More
