The highest dune in Europe, a unique landscape with an incredible panoramic view over the ocean, forest and Arcachon Bay but also and more importantly, a living, natural space that needs to be looked after and protected. Since December 2007, the Syndicat Mixte de la Grande Dune du Pilat has been working to protect and preserve this national piece of heritage that belongs to us all. From the top of this giant (109 meters high, 2,7 kilometers long, 500 meters wide), you can see many remarkable sites of the region.

The only essential cost is for the car park. I think you get half an hour free but if you want to climb the dune, you need a bit more time. The only problem is not the cost but the fact that you have to use a card to pay and it doesn't tell you until you arrive at the... More

We decided to climb up in the sand instead of the stairs… can be a challenge for some - the stairs were very busy (early afternoon). Quite beautiful view from atop - overlooking the Bassin d’Arcachon. It is free to explore the dunes… parking for a little less than 2 hrs was 1 euro. Max is 4 euros. You will... More

We were staying near Bordeaux, and this is one of the places we wanted to see, so glad we did. Wow!!! What a sight to behold and views from the top are also amazing, and to think that each year it's moving further and further into the forest. I'm not the best at climbing, so was bit of a struggle... Not as spectacular as the Sydney's sand dunes I remember. As a child my family and I often went to the Kurnell sand dunes (massive) near Sydney - there are information boards with Aboriginal history and a plaque showing where Captain Cook "discovered" the land down under for the British in 1770. Sometimes we visited by boat. With that in... More

We took a half day tour from Bordeaux to climb the Dune and then have some oysters and wine. Dune is a great site to see and the view from the top is worth the trip. Well worth the hour's drive from Bordeaux. Could spend a lot of time walking atop the dune if you were on your own. Good... More

A M A Z I N G Downside (if you are not fit): you see all these children running up and down the dune like a million times while you are still trying to get to the top for the first time and afraid you will not make it to the top alive. But you finally make it, and see... More

Go up (170 stairs), but once at 100 m above sea level what a view on the Ocean, the Basin d'Arcachon, le Cap Ferret and the inland forests!

Rest enjoyed our trip to Dune du Pilat. We cycled from Arcachon, about 50 minutes, and was impressed by the quality of the food establishments that were available close to the Dune. The Dune itself was well worth the climb - using the steps - and despite the number if people doing the same you could escape from the masses... More

A huge dune, with great vistas be it on the sea, towards the dense forest inland or on the dune itself.

This place is amazing, we stayed on the beach for a few hours & then headed to a very secluded bar with great tunes & excellent tapas. We walked up the dunes to watch the sun set and then back along the beach to our car! A perfect day! I can imagine it is very busy at the weekend &... More
