The highest dune in Europe, a unique landscape with an incredible panoramic view over the ocean, forest and Arcachon Bay but also and more importantly, a living, natural space that needs to be looked after and protected. Since December 2007, the Syndicat Mixte de la Grande Dune du Pilat has been working to protect and preserve this national piece of heritage that belongs to us all. From the top of this giant (109 meters high, 2,7 kilometers long, 500 meters wide), you can see many remarkable sites of the region.

Beautiful place with mix of tourist attractions and natural beauty.

The largest sand dunes in Europe are a sight to behold. You have to go see them to appreciate the size of the dunes.

As the weather cleared off, we hoped to have a good view and we were not disappointed. Great climb on the sand althiugh there is an easier option via a flight of steps. Absolitely breathtaking views of sandy beaches and the Cap Ferret in the distance. As a bonus you can relax lying on the fine sand and saviour the... More

We had never heard of this before. It is amazing. The parking lot accommodates many vehicles and is free for the first half hour then 4€ for half a day. If you walk to the dune and to the top you will need to pay the half a day rate. When we where there there were only brochures in French... More

We didn't like the flat area we were in, as we are used to hills, but the dune peeked above the trees and looked amazing. We were not disappointed, it was fabulous. We walked up the stairs and walked down the sand dune, but were told don't try and walk the other side down to the sea as its too... More

I have never seen real dune and it was so huge. Beautiful landscape around, ocean, dune above tress and huge forest. Seems to be great place for summer too.

Never heard of it before. Just watched a photo in Bordeaux airport. It is around 50km from Bordeaux centre. Huge hill of sand of around 150 mts of height and 3 km length. They put stairs to make the climbing easiers. Bad point, the may close it from may 2017. Really worth the effort.

You park in a forested area there is a toilet and souvenir shops and cafe and sandwich shops you walk by on the way to and back from the dune. The climb is steep but there lots of older folks making it so I was confident. Looks like they put stairs in they were installing them today but couldn't use... More

Beautiful sand dunes with breathtaking views of the ocean. So quiet just the waves. Not too crowded at this time of year. An effort to get to but certainly worth it.

Youngsters and those who are fit have no trouble running up and down this huge dune. But if like me you are a bit older and unfit climbing to the top is hard work. It's worth the effort though - the views from the top, both inland over the forest and out to sea - are fantastic. Take water with... More

I sent two holidays at Dune du Pilat. The first time I was simply amazed by this rock-solid monument built by nature out of sand! Really unique and impressing. It is just great to use the public stairways to the top of the dune or walk besides the official paths to get a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean from the... More
