Visiting the adjoining bistro is a must! Walking around the castle is lovely. So beautiful. But the little cafe is the perfect way to end the trip here. Staff is super sweet and spoke English (super helpful to us Texans) and the wine was YUMMY.

An an unparalleled view of the alps and lake Lucerne. Finding this castle is easy and when you arrive you can either park at the gate and walk to the castle. As you approach the view of the castle is blocked by a slop so the moment you arrive at the main entrance you'll be amazed at the garden and the building itself. This castle is very romantic and you can walk around the whole building.

I met my girlfriend here and proposed to her overlooking the lake and mountains. Perfect view and a quiet, non-touristy area.

Meggen is a village 4 km away from Lucerne (15’ by bus from Schwannenplatz) where well-off people live in nice residences in the countryside. The Castle was sort of a surprise. There is no bus taking you very close to it, thus you have to walk for around 20 minutes from the bus station. The castle (which I could only visit from the outside) is a replica of a Chateau de la Loire. It is slightly trash. It was inhabited until 1974. The surrounding countryside and vineyard is worth the visit. The garden and the view are impressive. Once you have visited and took enough pictures, please consider a stop at the bistro facing the castle: nice, lovely service and delicious homemade cakes.

The Schloss Meggenhorn is located about 15 minutes outside of central Lucern. The manor is impressive, but only allows visitors limited entry on weekends. The grounds are beautiful, including sculpted gardens and private vineyards, as well as some smaller animals for the little ones. Definitely a place to relax, have a picnic, and enjoy the view!

Spontaneity at it’s best! On our last day in Luzern we had no plans (having seen Mt Rigi, Titlis and Piltus during our stay). I decided to browse through TA for ideas and so glad i came across this place (side note: Meggen is in zone 10 of the bus network which meant travel was covered by the luzern visitor pass so getting there by bus is free!). Once we got off the bus, we just followed the brown signs and came to the gate entrance of the castle, then it was a short uphill walk to reach the magnificent grounds and postcard perfect views. The best part is this place is so quiet you can literally just here birds chirping. It makes a great picnic spot so would recommend bringing snacks. Would definitely recommend this hidden gem to others if they are into lovely scenery (and who wouldn’t be if they in switzerland, right?!)

We’d particularly recommend getting the city boat (ferry) from the Hermitage hotel to the base of the hill and climbing up to the Schloß.
It’s actually pretty simple to get to: bus 24 from central Lucerne or the station and get off at the ‘Hermitage’ stop, which is next to the hotel. Then head down to the ferry terminal in the hotel garden, where the board explains prices and times of the ferry to Meggenhorn.
Once you arrive, you have a walk up past a boat house and will encounter a children’s play area, then a farm with a range of lovely animals and a vineyard before getting to the Schloß.
It’s only open certain days (weekend) so ensure to plan your day. Although honestly it’s worth it anyway due the incredible views and beautiful gardens accompanying it that you can freely walk around.
Enjoy!
Ps the only thing to watch out for is the Schloß Bistro only opens in the evening, so be sure to take water / refreshments with you!

After a long travelling time to this castle, I realized it was booked for a wedding party. Nowhere in the website wrote that and people just blatantly ignored me

The castle has several rooms that are decorated as they were when the family of Zurich textile industrialist Jakob Heinrich Frey-Baumann lived there. Only a few rooms are open to the public and there is a self-guided audio tour that takes less than a half hour to complete. In my opinion, this castle is not suitable for children as I saw no exhibits that are child-friendly. However, there is a petting zoo and "adventure playground" for younger children on the grounds near the castle.
Admission is not included with the Swiss Rail Pass or Lucerne Visitor's Card. We paid 5 francs each for two adults. The gardens are pleasant but underwhelming--lots of roses and hydrangeas. There is a vineyard and a cafe as well as clean public restrooms.
We arrived by bus and walked about 1k following the signs (some steep parts). We returned to Lucerne by ferry after a short, steep downhill walk.

The Schloss is lovely, but no one I asked knew where it was! From the bus driver to the receptionist at Heritage Hotel. Finally found it after walking 3km. Lovely garden walks, waited till half an hour for the door to open, only to find a locked door and a note saying "I'll be back at 2pm" So I did not see the inside. All was not lost , I walked back to Lucerne along the lake, very beautiful with lots of villas along the way. BUT come on Schloss Meggenhorn not good enough!
