For those travellers visiting by public transport, I would strongly recommend you research the regularity of bus services along the R332 route from Parc Natural de Las Lagunas de la Mata in Torrevieja. Despite checking bus schedules online and asking locals to confirm the correct point at which to wait for my return journey to Torrevieja, I was left stranded for almost 2 hours in 30°+ heat waiting for no-show buses. I finally resorted to seeking help from a real estate agent (yes!) in La Mata town who knew the bus departure point in the town centre. Within 15 minutes I was on the correct bus back to Torrevieja.

What a let down this place is
There’s lots of rubbish ,people have thrown picnic and other bits even used tampax
People were floating in the water and covering themselves in the mud which was nice to see
What could see was the pink way water which is what we came for
The museum is closed

Yesterday morning 25.04.2016 me and my husband went to the visitor centre of the Park and enquired about the vineyard, which a friend had told us about. The man in the centre gave us a booklet (in English) which gave the directions to follow for this 50 minute walk. When you come out of the centre and turn to the right the first thing to feast your eyes is an awesome view of the surrounding landscapes and the beautiful blue lake. I took a few photos from here and then we followed the Vineyard trail path which is interspersed with information boards giving various details of the history and the grape growing methods. It is an easy walk on mostly sandy paths but I would advise wearing sensible walking shoes or trainers. It was a lovely morning and so peaceful even though the main N332 is not far away. There were flamingos on the blue lake and a lizard scurrying through the undergrowth. Although we didn't see any it is home to a variety of birds and many species of flora. We would recommend this place if you feel you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We completed the walk and then drove into la Mata town for a café con leche in the main square overlooking the beach and Mediterranean sea.

I visited these lakes with friends with the intention of bathing in them. On arrival we’re met with police who were issuing a fine to 2 people who had been bathing in them. Absolutely no bathing is allowed. You can go visit and take photos. Fines are issued from 60 euros to 600 euros. We then went to San Pedro where you’re encouraged to bathe in the salt water and cover yourself in mud. Only the water there isn’t pink.

My girlfriend and I were very excited to go and visit the pink lake when we first started planning our trip to Alicante.
We looked up the reviews online before planning our travel route and made sure to stop at the lake in Torrevieja. We put the location in on Google maps and we were directed to the 'nature reserve'. Upon arrival, there were no signs of the lake being a nature reserve as salt processing plants were visible around the outskirts of the lake. It had a very industrial feel to it and did not meet any expectations. We had planned to take some nice photos for our photography social media accounts (Instagram etc) as we'd seen posts about the lake before.
We were also lead to believe by reviews we'd seen that the lake was perfect for bathing due to the high salt content. We saw a sign before the 'entrance' that said no bathing, no mud baths, and no swimming. We decided to walk to the lake anyway only to find 10 minutes later the police turning up to tell everyone who was already in the water to get out.
There were no shaded areas or seating areas as shown in pictures we had seen. We can only assume that the 'nature reserve' had been reserved for harvesting salt by some large corporation, therefore ceasing to be a nice natural spot for visitors.
We stayed for 20 minutes, attempted to get some pictures of the pink lake which mainly turned out to be a light brown (social media photos must be highly saturated, we know this as we edited our own photos to bring the vibrant pink out!), then decided to depart and head to a nearby beach to fill the void that the expectations of the lake had left behind.
We were very excited to see this place as we love to travel and visit beautiful natural locations. As of September 2019 we would not recommend spending the time to travel here.

This is very peaceful and great for a slow walk around nature. There are 2 trails you can follow - one being longer than the other. There are also multiple lookout spots to look at the birds in the lake nearby. Great for animal lovers and families of all ages There is also an area with park benches for people to sit and eat food at. Will be visiting again

We registered for a free guided walk at La Mata Lagunas after seeing an advert in the local press. The walks are either in Spanish or English, which you must specify when reserving your place. The walk was conducted by 'OXYTOURS' Alicante. The guide spoke very good English, so we were able to understand everything. The guided tour we chose was about the Laguna, the natural park and the bird life. Although there are 5 other walks at varying times, registration is essential, as there are only 50 places available on each walk. Our guide covering everything from types of birds, to migration of certain species, even setting up a telescope for us to view various birds and wildlife. Although we had taken a pair of binoculars between us, the guide also loaned a pair to people who hadn't got them. It was clear to see how passionate and knowledgeable the guide was as he gave us a lot of information regarding the area, even including some details about the type of plants around the Lagunas. The guided walk lasts around 4 hours, and you need to take a drink and small snack as there are no restaurant facilities available due to the natural and ecological environment of the area. We can thoroughly recommend the guided walks, a great few hours learning about the local area, with an excellent guide as well.
