Firstly, we began our walk from the wrong place! The GPS took us to a lower parking area 3.8 kms further down from the more popular Pagomukurre parking area. The problem here is your ascent to the top is 7.6 kms harder and longer. This was our first time in the park and therefore we were unaware of the distance/issue. It put a handicap on our day as i was walking with kids and knew that we subsequently we wouldn't reach the top. As predicted, after climbing for 3 hours we reached the lower plateau, 1.8 kms from Gorbeia's peak and here our ascent ended, we enjoyed the awesome views, and a well deserved snack overlooking Bizkaia, on this clear and sunny day and headed back down. The journey back was 2.5 hours, again, as we had the extra 3.8 kms to walk and this proved long and unnecessary as it really could have been better sign posted. **REGUGIO** The main refugio, which is open to the public has an extremely rude, bad mannered man there. He was highly unhelpful, so much so we decided to defecate in the field rather than use thw facility. We really were put off by having even a drink there. Avoid! So, to conclude, our day was interesting, challenging for the kids due to distance walked, but enjoyable. It is a good 6 hours with kids but a safe and beautiful environment.

A car is a must. Advanced knowledge of the route would also be very useful. We followed google maps and it took us up a very poor road and to the wrong car park. Pagomakurre Bidea, 12, 48143 Areatza, BI, Spain is the correct starting point. From here the first part of the walk is a fairly easy gradual slope that is paved. We met quite a few young children. The route takes you through local farmland and there are herds of cattle, goats and horses roaming the hilltops. Once you hit 1000m there the terrain changes to a track. Take care with the wind as you turn the corner into a valley, we almost lost our hats! From here the path becomes more rocky for a short period as you start the next phase of the ascent after a nice picnic spot I. The shade of some trees. After the rocky path it is a sharp continuous ascent to the peak. This is the physically challenging part of the home but very manageable with a few rests. The panoramic vistas along the way are really beautiful. You can see far into Basque Country and count numerous peaks in every direction. Definitely a worthwhile trip.

A very beautiful national park that presents a well signed, but challenging walk for two fit 50 year olds. Staying at ellauri hotel we drove via areatza to parking st the end of the road in Pagumakurre. The drive takes around 20 minutes and climbs from around 200 m to 900 metres. Large parking and route, even on a work day was well frequented. About 40 minutes of climbing until above tree line to open - almost alpine scenery, where route plateaus for about 20 minutes. To you right short trail to refuge with good mountain food. The climbing again of around an hour or more, through a river bed and then to Gorbeia summit. Spectacular views and good views of vultures flying overhead and over valley. Wear good footwear and take sufficient water. Took three hours to top (including 30 mins at refuge) and 1:45 back. Great hike in lovely Eater weather 18 centigrade.

The nature reserve of Gorbeia is spectacular and perfect for hiking. In the hotel Ellauri Kepa gave us all the information to visit some of the most interesting points. Surely we will return!

We have been here in autimn when all the lanscapes are very colourful and picturesque. Park is very well organized, there are lots of signposts and information boards there. The paths are convenient for tracking, riding and cycling.
