The area
Neighborhood: Fitzroy
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighborhood that embraces both old and new.

Fitzroy was the first suburb established outside the city of Melbourne. It is known for its bars and restaurants, and bohemian nightlife. Also, it's famous for its art and galleries. Fitzroy is easy to get to. jet catch the tram. By the way, the Fitzroy Town Hall is one of Melbourne's most impressive public buildings.

My mate lives in this area but hasn’t really ventured from his so called safe streets. So we went off a bit grid and dis covered some cool laneway. Some were a bit smelly BUT some incredible street art and cool neighbourhoods to discover.

Recently I visited Fitzroy for a 40th birthday...but it was dark and I was on a tram... but even in the low light I could see that it was interesting. So today I caught a train to Southern Cross and the Number 11 tram out there again. I wasn't entirely sure where to get off, so I randomly chose a place and started walking. There are some really antiquated buildings out there that capture your eye as you walk, and even on a public holiday the streets still had plenty of people about... although probably not as many as a normal work day.

The cafes all look so trendy and Melbourn-fied ... or is that Fitzroy-fied... they have a certain charm and add to the personality of the area.

This is a vibrant suburb with much on offer.... it's worth heading out to have a look.

Brunswick St is more a precinct than just a street. You need to explore the side streets as well including Gertrude, Moor and Rose Streets. Some of the more interesting cafes, bars, shops, galleries and graffiti are in the side streets. Brunswick St is serviced by the number 11 tram which starts in Collins St in the CBD. Many of the buildings in this area are protected by a historic overlay.

Its the hipster central of Australia. Ladies with tattoos on their legs (very chic now) and men with big long bushy beards (equally chic). Many years back (or decades actually, in the 70's) Brunswick St Fitzroy was a bohemian area where artists and musicians would gather. Painting by day and drinking by night. But most of the famous venues have long since gone (Punters Club for example, which broke many new bands decades ago). Nowadays its very shallow, yes it has some Indian takeaway and some independent fashion shops but its no longer bohemian, more fashionista meets hipster. Worth a visit but nothing to write home about.

Each area around Melbourne are interesting, they are looking like a village with there own identity. Fitzroy is one of them with is own character. A lovely and secure place to walk in. Two main streets Smiths and Brunswick join by Gertrude. You will find in those one's café designer clothes shops.... anything you are looking for, the atmosphere is between Soho(NY), London and le Marais in Paris. Have a look also on the smalls streets nearby, some old red bricks workshop or warehouse have been renovating for office apartments or shops. You will have a deep experience on the graffiti street art. Enjoy a good wine at naked for Satan rooftop a lunch at the delicatessen café and have a look to Vassett flowers shops. Start at the corner of Gertrude and Smith and walk to the end of Brunswich. A like is good for me ;-)
