We were touring the Tuscany area of Italy with our origin from the La Spezia port. Vezzano Ligure is only ~4 miles Northeast of La Spezia. Vezzano Ligure is located on a foothills of Ligurian Apennines. Its hilltop location is near where Vara and the Magra rivers meet. Some historians speculate that this village dates to prehistoric times. However, most agree that it dates to early Roman era times. For certain, definitive records go back to the Middle Ages. For example, In a May 963 document from Otto I (Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire), Vezzano and its castle, the fortifications and the court are defined as territories given to the Luni bishop, who ruled eastern Liguria. Vezzano Ligure is on the summit of two hills, split into Vezzano Superiore (also Soprano) and Vezzano Inferiore (also Sottano). Intriguing sites include the remains of the Vezzano Superiore castle. The old defensive castle (second castle) in Vezzano Inferiore, which is now referred to as Palazzo Giustiniani, based upon its being transformed from protective post to noble residence. Connected to Palazzo Giustiniani by a wooden bridge near 70 feet high is the Pentagonal tower (13th century). This was used yo view and defend the surrounding valley. Although the tower is not as tall (partly destroyed and some buried), it is still historically impressive. Also see, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Assunta (12th century), church of San Sebastiano (17th century), Our Lady of Soccorso sanctuary (18th century) and Arch of San Giorgio. Beyond the wonderful city, visitors can see excellent picturesque views of the surrounding lands, valley, vineyards et cetera.

The people are very nice and the views are magnificent. We suggest that you stay in town at least one night.

This town offers a lot for the photojournalist, or the couple looking for a quiet getaway with driving access to nearby Italia. Driving is best, if you want to make it a longer stay. The Relais Al Convento is both the only hotel in town, and the only hotel you'll need.

Wow! We arrived in Vezzano Ligure on a Sunday on our way to Italy (and actually we stayed here on the way back as well.) The town is fantastic and picturesque. As soon as we checked into the hotel, my husband went out to paint a watercolor, and I wandered through the streets taking photographs. Being Sunday, and a small town, no one was around. Many of the streets were partially covered by tunnels. I am not sure why, and still need to look it up. There is a Torre Pentagonale (5 sided tower tower) in a high spot, which is protected by the European Union etc.. And lots of cats.
