We wanted to go to Tihany and if you are coming from Siofok then this is the easiest way. Note you can get buses from Siofox to Tihany but note the returning times are as they finish very early evening. 700 ft per adult to cross on foot. They run every 40 minutes but check times are they change through the season. Take less then 10 minutes to cross the lake. Small toilet on board. Smooth crossing and lovely views. There is a bus stop a short distances away where it can take you up to Tihany center which is about 5km away and up hill. Worth the visit.

As part of our day tour of Balaton lake we crossed the lake on the car ferry - a journey of about 20 minutes. Good views of the lake, and a change from driving and walking around sights as well as a bit of quiet excitement.

We were lucky enough to get there just in time, not too much of a lineup, paid the price for the vehicle, and before you knew it we were across. Lovely scenery on the way and very quick to reach the other side.

Following Google Maps from Budapest we were taken to the opposite side of the lake from Tihany and unbeknownst to us we had to take the ferry. Luckily it was very simple with little waiting and a reasonable price. Bonus of a great view and a relatively unique experience.

The ferry is fine, efficient, and very pleasant on a hot summer's day. We use it often. The dock itself is vastly overdue for a complete revamp. As you often have to wait for a while before the ferrry departs - anything up to an hour out of season - it is important to have a good coffee shop, the opportunity for edible light meals and some half decent shopping would be nice as well, even if you are only browsing for gifts or a summer t-shirt. Let me emphasise for visitors - the dock has NONE of these things. Having to wait there for more than 5 minutes is quite a depressing experience. Would that the Karolina had decided to locate its Tihany premises here! Aim to get there 10 mins before departure and you'll be fine, because you won't have time to look around in vain for something worth doing.

It is an easy and affordable way to explore the other (north vs south) side of the lake Balaton during vacations. Easy to drive on and off the ferry, the trip is about 10...15 min (1,3km). No service on the ferry, but for this short time it would not even make sense. In both Tihany and Szantod port there are some cathering opportunities. Great experience for kids as well. Also a good solution for bikers.
