Easy walk from Helmsdale, me and the dog went round by the river. Some sand but the outstanding thing was the beautiful rocks. Go to the Geo park at the Timespan museum for info on Geology

Reminds me of some of the smugglers coves in Cornwall! Boat Winch on the old port before it was opened up. More stone than sand but still a beautiful little beach to visit.

The shoreline at Helmsdale is a mixture of sand, pebbles and rocks and so is great for beach combing and to the north, rock-pooling. The local geology is really interesting which means the variety of pebbles and stones in the area is amazing. I found an amethyst one of the last times I went exploring! It's a renowned place to find fossils - but we haven't been lucky enough to find any yet.

Me and my boyfriend were doing the NC500 route and this beach was recommended for being great for fossils. I was quite excited because I was not too sure what fossils really looked like or how many would be on the beach. We managed to park a little down the way, which to be honest was probably not the right area but there were lots of big beautiful rocks and beautiful views too. We sadly did not find any fossils as we did not know what we were looking for but it was great fun smashing rocks off each other to see if there was anything inside.

The beaches around Helmsdale might be shingle but geological speaking (or even just beachwalking) you are in for a treat. For a crafter it is a beachcombers dream. The coast here is Jurasic so look out for fossilised wood and try the walk beyond the harbour and towards Navidale. Heading the other way is equally interesting. Not much for sand lovers but well, lying on a beach is so boring.

Whereas I share the opinion of other reviewers that Helmsdale is a nice little town, this “attraction” is supposedly only about the beach, and with that in mind I must say that it is not particularly attractive.

Yes - Helmsdale is at least a 4 star place. The beach however is distinctly average.
