A Pretty Little Lake In Picturesque Thorpness
Sep 2020
Catching up on some reviews so adding this review from a September visit.
We visited Suffolk for a week in September.
Visited The Meare after visiting Aldburgh. The Meare is a pretty little lake in the middle of the village of Thorpness.
There is a tea room/takeaway shop. Plenty of benches to sit on around the lake. But, please be aware of the amount of swans & ducks & the obvious mess they leave behind !!!

We walked from Aldeburgh along the beach and it was worth the walk. Sat and watched people boating even at the end of October.

Fun kayak
Oct 2020 • Family
Rented a kayak each for an hour and had a lovely time. Safe opportunity for my 9yo to go solo for the first time away from currents and deep water, and for him to discover that paddling alone is not quite as simple as it looks. But zigzagging across the lake and bumping into the reeds didn’t matter. We laughed, enjoyed the scenery and the mini escape from reality. It’s scenic, peaceful and lovely out on the water.

A small lake in picturesque village well worth the visit.
Sep 2020
The metre sits at the heart of the village which was established in the years before the first world war as a holiday village. the metre was created and today has boats for hire and a tea shop beside. The car park is close by and there are plenty of local walks on the beach on the low cliff to the north of the village and using the old railway line that ran from Sizewell to Aldeburgh. This is a very popular spot so be prepared to hunt for parking. Better bet is to walk from Aldeburgh - a marvellous stroll along the beach (there is a path that runs all the way just inland of the beach). Well worth the effort.

This is a truly lovely place for a holiday. Not only is the Meare itself unique with the individually named rowing boats and the many swans, but Thorepness village is perfect to walk around and view the House in the Clouds, the windmill and the long beach stretching right through to Aldeburgh. Excellent base for Aldeburgh, Southwold and surrounding area. Nearest pub the Dolphin Inn within easy walking distance is great for a drink in the garden or a meal in the restaurant.

Good fun using kayaks on the Thorpeness Meare. Great to get out and do something outside and in walking distance from pubs.

Miserable bloke on the till/taking the money, really miserable. Got the huff when two boats for one hour was £34, decided too pricey so changed to one boat for 4 people for one hour at £21, had to get his typex out and change it, not happy! Expensive for one hour, when you compare this to boats (with engines) on the broads, but pleasant lake and surrounds, still worth it, but dont expect service with a smile from mr ignorant. Youngs lads do all the hard work here.

Magical boating lake - love it here!
Jul 2020
There is so much to love about The Meare; whether you like a bit of kayaking or want to have a romantic rowing boat for two, or take a family and moor up at some of the cute little jetties, this is a really enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours (currently they are limiting to one hour due to COVID-19). The Meare is bigger than you might think, and there are lots of channels to explore. Personally, I love getting a rowing boat with someone else in the family rowing, and I can just lie back and enjoy the tranquillity of the dragon flies darting about the reeds. Buy some oats from The Meare cafe to feed the ducks and swans. You need a bit of imagination to find joy in the little buildings at the landing points (lots of duck poo and spider's webs) but if you can see past that, it is a great adventure.

Need to Match the Oars
Aug 2020 • Family
Hired a boat yesterday, the oars were completely mis matched one was longer and heavier than the other. There was also about two inches of rain water in the bottom so soggy feet. A little more care and maintenance would be good for £16 for 30mins.
