Massimo was a great online teacher. We did a live stream cooking class for my family in TX and my sister in CA. He accommodated a vegetarian menu and was very instructive, patient, and knowledgeable of course. We have done tours with Arianna & Friends before in Italy and this live stream was the next best thing we could do since we cannot travel to Italy during the pandemic. It was a great way to feel connected while learning to make great pasta!

In the time of Covid we are all to different extents starved for social connection of one form or another. The Bournes and Holmes had an opportunity recently to overcome this deficit with a remote wine tasting from Italy. When we visited there a few years ago we had a wonderful day tour including an olive oil tasting, coupled with an elegant brunch, followed by an opportunity to learn how to harvest olives (lacking something as there were no olives to harvest that year) and a visit to an olive oil processing location. Ever since we have been on the e-mail list of Arianna and Friends, the folks who organized that day for us. When we received an offer from them to buy some Tuscan wine with the additional benefit that they would participate in a tasting and pairing experience, we leapt at the opportunity. The wine came in due course as well as suggestions for a meal to go with it. Because of the time difference from Tuscany to Redlands we were pretty much limited to a lunch here which would mean Arianna would have to stay up rather late to guide us through the tasting. As I write this, we have just completed the experience, and we all enjoyed it tremendously. We tasted four different wines, 2 reds and a white from the Costa Toscana IGT (Indicazione geografica tipica) and a red from the newly designated DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) of Terre de Pisa which encompasses essentially the area between Pisa and Volterra. Just as many of our areas in California have pushed to be recognized as wine regions and AVA, the winemakers from this area banded together to get their region recognized as something special, hence the new DOC. At the suggestion of Arianna, MaryJo prepared a cheese course to pair with the white, a light cheese stuffed pasta shell with marinara, a steak dish and a heavy on chocolate Tiramisu to accompany the three reds. The wines were all from a very old farm making wine for centuries, but bottling it for wider distribution since 1984, named Tenuta di Ghizzano. The white (Il Ghizzano Bianco) was a blend of three grapes 50% vermentino,20% Malvasia Bianca, 30% trebbiano. Creamy yellow color and quite crisp and dry. Went superbly with the cheeses Mary Jo selected, particularly the pecorino. The first red (Il Ghizzano) was 95% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot. It was light and dry and paired extremely well with the pasta shells. The more robust Veneroso (a typical super Tuscan with a combination of 70% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon) was a perfect complement to the beef. The final wine Nambrot was more of a typical Bordeaux blend, very smooth, which Arianna called a meditation wine. All French style grapes grown in Tuscany, 60% Merlot with 20 % each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. By the time we got to this we were definitely all in the mood for meditation. There was not a wine we didn’t enjoy. It was a memorable experience that we would recommend to anyone. When you visit Tuscany be sure to contact Arianna (info@ariannaandfriends.com). I am sure she would also be happy to sell you some wine and host a similar tasting for you. For an hour or so we felt we were visiting Tuscany again and reliving our wonderful experiences there.

Grazie mille Robert & Friends for this great review. Wow, you are the best students. Next to your big natural interest in wine, you really picked all info I shared with you and this is very much satisfactory. I'm sure there will be new chances to meet online, maybe an olive oil tasting with the new olive oil 2020 that will be ready to be shipped soon, or an online cooking class to learn so new recipes from Tuscany. I'm glad we spent time together and thank you for showing me that marvellous winecellar Jay owns. Stay well and see you soon again!

Grazie mille, Massimo e Arianna&Friends! Your Introduction to Italian was the perfect way for me to expand my basic Italian phrases and begin to learn your beautiful language. Thank you for your patience with a student who has a “senior brain." Taking your class with two friends made it even more affordable and also MORE FUN! For prospective students interested in learning Italian, this is a great way to start your journey. Massimo is an excellent teacher, and as he himself has learned several languages on his own and is now studying Arabic, he knows how to patiently guide you through a new language. If you are planning your first trip to Italy or are going back to the country you have come to love, his class will assist with the correct pronunciation of key phrases to use when meeting people, shopping, and dining. As Massimo says, Italians will be glad to help you and will patiently listen to you. Some may correct you but they are only trying to help you with the correct pronunciation as they are appreciative when foreigners want to learn their language.

Ciao Ann! Grazie infinite for your kind words. I really enjoyed teaching the three of you and as you said it is like a journey. It is a very important task for a teacher to give students self-confidence so that after as part of the journey together they can travel on their own! Thank you all also for supporting us in this tough moment. We really hope that soon borders will open again and we will start providing our tour experiences and Italian classes in person. Saluti a presto! Massimo
