We completed the red route - a moderate level, 2.5 mile walk which is well waymarked (though watch for the markers near the start before Thomas's Wood - there is a sharp left turn which can be missed).

It is a lovely walk through the forest.

It is easy to park (£2 for 2 hours), there are toilets at the Visitor Centre and a really good cafe serving drinks and a wide menu of meals and snacks.

We parked near the Visitor's Centre today - £2 parking for upto 2 hours, £4 parking for all day. The carpark is a short 2 minute walk from the Visitor's Centre. The cafe next door to the Visitor's Centre looked like it was opening up, just before 9am this morning and when we walked past again a couple of hours later it looked to be quite busy, with lots of outdoor seating areas allowing to socially distance. The toilets, however, are still closed all day as far as I am aware.

The paths are very popular with dog walkers, cyclists and runners, so always best to keep your eyes open. There seem to have been some new information boards put up over the past couple of months? and some new wooden animal carvings. The older sculptures also seem to have been given a coat of varnish, as look to be in much better condition than on our last visit.

We enjoy the many trails through the beautiful forest, whatever the weather! as the paths are very good, even after a lot of rain they are not slippy or too muddy - although always best to wear sensible shoes. There is a large play area for kids, plus a smaller area for younger children and a trim trail for adults. There are a couple of ponds with boardwalks and a small nature reserve. There are several picnic areas and many benches throughout the forest.

Along the main path, as you walk past the Visitor's Centre and the train into the forest, there are dozens of lovely wooden sculptures - we seem to find a new one every time we visit! We also like that there are many pokestops and gyms here too! As most sculpture has a pokestop attached. So a great way to fill your pokebag.

This is a fantastic days outing with something for everyone of all ages. The carvings and obstacle apparatus add great interest to the walk, the playgrounds are great. it is so peaceful and enjoyable to wander around at leisure.
The one thing which ruined it for me was the amount of dog dirt. This is a place where many families with young children visit and it is such a safe environment for letting children run free.
We went when the cafe was serving from a hatch all the full menu they usually offered before the pandemic. Sadly there was a sign to say there were no toilet facilities, we came across a few distressed families who had small children desperate for the toilet, perhaps this could be addressed in some way.

Well done to the money grabbing council bump the price up to £2 for 2 hours parking during Covid. Big encouragement for people to get out in the fresh air. What a kick in the teeth for the excellent cafe who are doing excellent work during the crisis keeping people fed and safe,, not a lot of time to enjoy a walk and take in a bite to eat at what is a great place to eat at reasonable prices and excellent service. Then if you do stop, learn you haven't allowed the toilets to open so off we rush home to the loo.

Many of my readers will not be aware that I live in an area that is quite uppy downy! The name gives it away, Cleveland, ( from the Norse, land of cliffs).

That we have a beautiful level ex railway line to use as a walkway, for now. There are plans afoot to re-open a park and ride.

Well over 3 miles from end to end this linear walk is great for the less able, wheelchair friendly, and dry level walking. What more can you ask for.

Scenery to die for, views of Roseberry Topping, and the Eston Hills. Skyscrapers ever changing with the wind. People say Yorkshire is all slag heaps, mill towns, flat caps and whippets. Come here and see Yorkshire at it's best!

With a cafe on site, heaven!

We visited for a nice autumnal walk. We chose the green path which was more than tricky enough for us as it was wet and quite slippy, but that was entirely our fault for not following the main road. Beautiful views and quiet throughout most of our trail.

Massive downside was lack of toilet facilities being open, especially as the cafe was. As we approached the visitor centre we were met by numerous children peeing against trees or in the fields and even a couple of adults. With the parking and the cafe making good money, I see no reason why they cannot open the toilets!

Great place to visit if walking, cycling or just out with the grandkids as there is a play area, cafe, and plenty to see in the woods, ie. wood carvings , fitness areas and much more.

I have reviewed the cafe separately, and this review is only about the actual visitor centre.

Although the visitor centre is situated in a large, modern building, the fact is that the cafe and offices take up half the space, leaving a visitor centre that is fine - but no more than that.

Come here all the time for lunch and a catch up. The food is lovely and the rocky road is the best I’ve ever had! Staff are great and always create a lovely atmosphere.
