Just looking

Churches interest me, and St Mary’s is well worth a few minutes of your time to look at and perhaps enjoy the atmosphere in this church.
A small added attraction is the second hand book stall inside the church. Also well worth an extra few minutes of your time.

Lovely old village church just off the old village square. Lots of interesting features to see - well worth a visit if you are passing.

Impressively large
Nov 2017 • Solo
This large church is close to the village square and entered via a large and very old wooden door. Inside the floors are tiled and covered by a red carpet. The walls are white, but there are hardly any plaques adorning them, although close to the pulpit is a framed memorial listing those who died in both wars.
There is a huge organ on the first floor at the rear of the church and the windows are a mixture of plain and coloured glass. There are two columns of brown wooden pews that are movable, but there are more seats to sit on than pews.
The central aisle area is divided from the two outer wings of the church by four huge stone arches and at the front next to the altar is a small chapel.
At the rear of the church is an ornate cream and black board that lists the rectors and vicars back to 1191 and in the opposite corner and large amount of books for sale for fifty pence, although there did not appear to be a booklet about the history of the church available.
This is a large village church, parking is available outside and it is worth a visit.

Beautiful Church

We enjoyed a little peaceful interlude. Loved the area with books for sale & plan to donate some on our next visit to Elham. Clearly a well used church with many activities for all ages.

Historic church going back to the 12th century
Sep 2017 • Couples
We had never been to Elham before but decided to stay there for a couple of nights as a base for touring this part of Kent. On the Sunday morning we took a walk around the village, where there are many beautiful historic buildings. The church is at the heart of the village, with a square (and inevitable pub) at one end, and is surrounded by an old graveyard.

Being Sunday, there were services at 8am and 9.30am, so we did not intrude, though I would have like to have seen inside, but it was enjoyable exploring outside and in the graveyard.

Beautiful church
Jun 2017 • Friends
Elham is an English village at its best. Beautiful buildings, a lovely tea room, old fashioned pubs and walks. St Mary The Virgin is a church which oozes history and a calm meditative atmosphere. It looks like the heart of a community at ease with itself. A must see if you are visiting the village.

We took a wander around Elham and found that thankfully the church was open! In we went quiet , beautiful stained glass windows. There are graves in the floor. The local community are trying to raise money for its upkeep. So please make a donation while you are there. The church is just off the main road through Elham. If you walk down the road opposite the Abbots Fireside and to the side of The Rose and crown walk into the village square and to the right is the church. The number 17 bus runs between Canterbury and Folkestone and passes through Elham.
