About
Our museum wants to share the secret of military intelligence from the Boer War to the present day! Learn about espionage and secrets, and see how they played a major part in some of the biggest wars in history! As we are on an active military base, all visits need to be booked in advance and we require at least a week's notice before the visit.

Very interesting and informative of a critical service our military provides. The guides were ex-service personal some of whom served in the Intelligence in real combat. Signage was quite good with lots of details. The space is limited and they have much more to exhibit than space allows. .

What a hidden gem on our doorstep! Spent over 2 hours here, could have spent a lot longer as there is so much to look at and read about. Bill was superb as our host and guide, and was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Entrance is free, but we were more than happy to make a donation as we enjoyed our time so much, and would happily return to see the bits we missed on this visit.

This was the first visit on our two day package tour on this theme. We were welcombed by the curator and then shown round by two volunteers The visit was interesting and I learnt a number of things I hadn't previously known. I appreciated seats being provided at points during the tour so I didn't have to stand all the time.

This is an interesting but hard to access museum. You need to book in advance by email with passport or other details. On arrival you show your passport and are photographed as if you were going into a foreign country. As you are then accompanied to the museum and back out by a member of staff, you are unlikely to drift off so the whole palaver is over the top. We were received by an officer at the reception desk who was surly and hard to understand. The actual museum is comprehensive and interesting. It is also free. It would benefit from a bigger building as interesting information is crammed too tightly. We were shown round by a volunteer guide but as the display is self explanatory, you would do as well following it on your own and taking time to look at more than he directs you to. He was, however, very knowledgable. This museum deserves more custom buti T would need to make itself more accessible.

Thank you for your museum review, all feedback is very important to staff here at the museum. Access issues are quite difficult for visitors, and we understand the problems that can be faced with signing in, but unfortunately we are hindered by the security of the MOD site. We are making plans to move off site to a place near Woburn Abbey, which will remove any access issues visitors have at the moment. It will be a bigger space with a more spread out history of intelligence. We hope that you return once the new museum is built, and have a more enjoyable experience. Thank you, Harriet.

Went there on the 14th June and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As others have said you have to book in advance and sign in as it's a working Army base. Then one of the guides comes and collects you and if you're lucky like me you have the whole place to yourself! There's lots of interesting exhibits and I particularly enjoyed the SOE exhibition as it's a subject I'm extremely interested in. The guides are absolutely superb and there's nothing about Army intelligence they don't know about. I really can't recommend it highly enough and congratulate all those involved for their hard work and dedication. A hidden gem of a museum for sure!

A superb museum, with an amazing selection of unique intelligence related artefacts that you won’t see anywhere else, all very nicely displayed, as well as the complementary Medmenham photo interpretation collection. The tour, with an enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable guide, was excellent and very informative on both the history and background of intelligence gathering and the personal stories of some very brave people involved in intelligence work. The two hour tour simply flew by, and could easily have spent much longer afterwards studying many of the exhibits in more detail.

While you have to book a visit in advance, that’s not difficult, and it’s very well worth it, and for an real insight into these behind the scenes military activities it’s a must.

Use the SatNav postcode for the main gate as given on the museum website, and it’s easy to find.

Very highly recommended.

Having made arrangements for our visit in advance, my wife and I spent an absorbing couple of hours at the Military Intelligence Museum at Chicksands after calling in to see the nearby Shuttleworth Collection in the morning. Typing the name of the museum into Google Maps brought us to the main entrance of the JFC Chicksands camp from where we obtained a pass for our car and 2 personal passes at the guardroom. The Assistant Curator, Harriet Huggins, met us there and accompanied us in our car to the museum. Although relatively small in scale, the museum is packed with interesting exhibits and more than sufficient history and information on former UK military intelligence gathering operations and analysis methods to warrant a visit of 2 hours or longer. As it happened, we were the only visitors that afternoon and were fortunate enough to have a personal tour benefiting from Harriet’s boundless enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, what is on display at the museum . Harriet began by taking us through the intelligence cycle and then guided us through topics including Special Operations Executive missions behind enemy lines during WW II, the formation, history and work of the Intelligence Corp as well as BRIXMIS intelligence operations carried out in East Germany during the Cold War. A separate area of the museum hosts the Medmenham Collection of photographic interpretation and imagery analysis hardware and techniques. Overall, the museum is a veritable treasure trove of UK military intelligence history and artefacts and the only one in the UK so is not to be missed if you are in the area. Harriet touched on future plans to move the museum to a new location near Woburn outside the confines of an active military base which will make for easier access without the need to make prior arrangements for a visit. We very much look forward to visiting the museum next in its new location.

This museum has to be booked in advance; it is a Military base which is still in use today. Because of that security is very much prevalent. Having said that when you have got clearance to visit, it is very much worthwhile. One can not only go back into time as to how this Museum was founded and when but especially how it has grown in it's abilities to get 'intelligence' for our armed forces. From before the first World War through to present day, and especially during the Cold War period it is very illuminating and gives a lot of insight into what goes on with Intelligence. A worthwhile footnote is that it is also houses The Medmenham Collection which is extremely interesting photographic collection. All in all a very worthwhile visit; do though make sure you apply beforehand to get your pass for the day and authorisation to enter the grounds.
