Well worth a visit. We are not usually "into" visiting religious buildings but this one was certainly a pleasant surprise. We were there on a warm summer afternoon and spent a couple of hours wandering around the complex.Guided tours are available but you can see everything on your own.
We liked the contrast of old and new.

Santuario de Meritxell is the most important religious building in Andorra. It is a Contemporanean building, which was built in the 70s of the last century with a typical mountain and local stone. really it is a very different and local church, where you can see a exposition about all Andorran churches. Also it is a typical sightseeing point in the country. Very nice.

Located in a nice and quiet village. If you are interested in architecture its a must to go and see this different building. The outdoor spaces as well as the interior offer interesting spatial qualities. There is a rather big parking space close to the church and it is easy to access by car.

I have been fortunate enough to see a lot of churches over the years and it takes quite a lot to impress me. There was something very special about this place. The design is very clever - inviting the light and the surrounding countryside in, and giving the illusion of more space through use of windows and light. The architect used local slate and deliberately painted parts of the church white to represent the snow that covers the area for much of the year. If you are looking for something fancy and ornate do not go here. If you are looking for calm and spirituality then it's for you.

We stopped there as part of our "Marian Route" trip. The current sanctuary is a construction that was built on the 70s as replacement of the old one that burned down earlier. It is a quiet place to do worship but I am not a fan of this modern architecture. Compared to places like Montserrat, the place lost its connection to the meaning of the place. But overall it's a nice place to visit if you're in the area.

We took this trail without much expectation about the church but wanted for an easy walk after two days of 4-5 hours walk on trails. It was an easy walk which is also suitable for families and the church with modern architecture was a nice surprise of this walking trail! There is a guided tour in the church if you wish to learn more about the church and the history of it.

Travelling through Andorra from the French border; roughly half way between the towns of Canillo and Encamp one can hardly fail to notice, high up on the left hand side, the distinctive black and white arches of the Sanctuary of Meritxell.
One could be forgiven for rushing past, but it is well worth taking time out to visit this beautiful and tranquil place.
With the old sanctuary dating back to the middle of the 12th century, much of the original church was destroyed by fire in 1972 and later replaced with the ultra modern building which one sees today.
Entry to the complex, which includes both the remains of the old, as well as the new sanctuary is free, and guides are available. On the occasion of our visit there was no english speaking guide available and after many apologies a delightful french speaking lady offered to give us a tour. Using her limited english and our even more limited french, she was able to convey with great passion and enthusiasm the history of the sanctuary.
One does not need to be of any particular religious persuasion to appreciate the beauty and tranquility of this place.

We planned to spend the afternoon there, expecting a big and beautiful place full of stories. Indeed it is a beautiful place to see, go inside the cathedral and see the mountains through the glass roof/window. The feeling of being in the middle of the mountains give this place a lot of it's charm. It contains a Figure of holy Mary and child alike the one in Mont Serrat (yet different colours) and an old chapel which burned down (along with the original figure, now there is a new one) and was refurbished. The chapel dates back to either 14th or 16th century. The guide was speaking little english but he gave everything to Tell us the story about it. The Tour there lasts 20 min and is for free! Just entre the building and ask for it!
All in all: it was a nice visit, and a beautiful Building. Yet, not impressive or really historical from my point of view (my girlfriend loved it though!)

Probably the most famous church in Andorra. It is interesting for its importance, history and architecture. Very nice is a gallery of 3D models of the most famous stone churches in Andorra.

El aparcamiento cae después de una bajada muy pronunciada y ahi abajo hay uno y en la parte de arriba hay otro. En el propio Santuario, creo recordar que hay una cafeteria.
En la carretera propia de subida al Santuario hay otro restaurant.
