We were in Zdar nod Sazavou to visit the Santini masterpiece - the church at Zelany Hora. We stayed in the old monastery that has been converted into a hotel. Our rooms were in the tower. The staff was excellent and the rooms were very nice. I do not recommend staying in the tower if you have a mobility problem. Access is by spiral staircase with a rope for a hand rail. The grounds around the facility are very pleasant. It was a good experience.

Take the time of the visit of all the site, and do not forget the Pilgrimage Church of Saint John of Nepomuk (UNESCO)! We also spent the night in the tower... top :-)

The castle is open on some days only, so check this in advance. Otherwise you might end up with the museum and the gardens only.
The entrance to the gardens is either form the street or from the information center and it's for free. There is a cool souvenir shop where I bought some beer, chocolate and some other local products.
Parking place in front of the castle is huge and the historical bridge that is one of the top highlights of the town is close by. You will very probably pass through it with your car on your way to the castle, actually.

Modern exhibition for 21th Century visitors. Minimalist designed show-cases, video projections, full interactive exhibition - e.i. try to make a book on a screen from raw materials (leather - goat, ink - oak ball, quill - goose) it's real fun for children :) On ground floor there is a story of the Zdar monastery, 1st floor is a journey through the baroque epoque and its innovations and discoveries. Knowledge and facts are not so important, the exhibit affects the senses. Free audioguide available, not traditional - it's actually a child and an abbot dialogue. Worth the visit, 60 - 90 minutes approx.

Absolutely fantastic interactive museum providing insights of Cistercian monks life.

You will also find explanations about the origin and architecture of St John's church located close to this place.

The great news is that the museum has Audio guides available in several languages and the place is fabulous for kids!

Enjoy :-)

The whole complex of the monastery is renovated with the respect to the historical meaning of the place. At the same time, you are shown this in modern and interactive way, which attracts as kids as adults. There are activities in the museum, tours in/out-side of the complex and pleasant coffee place where one can easily enjoy the whole day. Come especially for Modern Dance Festival KORESPONDANCE in July!
