This sanctuary is based around a reservoir created during the Khmer Rouge regime. It is isolated, but accessible from Siem Reap. In the dry season, when the reservoir is largely emptied to water rice fields, there are rare Sarus cranes and other migrants, such as storks and ibis.

I took a trip arranged by the Sam Veasna Center. It was the wet season, so no cranes, but my guide, Hang, was amazing at spotting birds, often too far away for my binoculars, but easily viewed in his scope. We ended up seeing 44 different species, including a Bronze-wing Jacana, two different kingfishers, and several woodpeckers. Definitely a worthwhile outing for bird lovers.

We had a wonderful bird-watching tour here organised by Sam Veasna Conversation Tours. We spotted over thirty different species - at least our knowledgeable guide did! Would make sure that the Sarus Cranes are in the area before you organise a tour, however, if you're keen to watch them.
