Unable to reserve online for the same day but called and were able to make a reservation. The tour is in French so unfortunately we missed out on the history of Peche Merle. They give you the English self-guided laminated sheets for when you enter the cave so that you can read and follow along. We were in a group of about 20 people so it was a little big. We were close to the back of the group so that we could read and look but when the tour guide was finished explaining things, the lights would turn off so we were unable to get a good look at certain points of interest in the cave. The site is very interesting to visit and it’s incredible to see actual cave paintings as opposed to recreated ones as in Lascaux (although Lascaux is definitely worth a visit). Maybe a smaller group size would have made the visit more enjoyable and a little less rushed. If able to, watch the 15 min movie at the museum before doing the cave visit if you don’t speak French (the movie has subtitles); it will help explain some of the history.

The museum sets the stage for the cave tour. A combination of visuals and detailed information appeals to all ages and time available. We watched the film at the end of the tour which ended up being a nice recap bringing the whole experience together. One bathroom limits immediate accessibility during the busy season.

To be able to see up close a footprint made in the mud by a young boy thousands of years ago was one of the highlights. But there is so much more...beautiful wall paintings, rock formations, all well explained by our guide. This is one of the last caves where one can actually experience the history, nota replica like Lascaux. I have been here twice.

We booked on-line a few days before. Signs redirected us down to the shop and entrance to the cave where we collected out timed visit tickets. We couldn't get on an English guided tour and were prompted by another visitor to ask the guide for English hand outs BEFORE we went into the adjacent room to watch a film about how the cave was discovered and its paintings. The tour of the cave is incredible, fantastic paintings. It's not that cold, I went in shorts and short sleeved shirt. I took a top but didn't need it. Excellent and friendly service from the fast food and drinks outlet and adjacent souvenir shop. The lady there spoke excellent English and the food was very good. There are additional toilets signed down the steps to the right of the tables.

Before or after your Pech Merle tour, check out this small museum. Some nice artifacts, including mammoth bones.
