About
The Butterfly Conservatory is a Nature Regeneration Project dedicated to the preservation, growth, and study of the rainforest; with focus on butterflies and other tropical rainforest species, such as insects, frogs, lizards, fish, and plants of the Arenal region of Costa Rica. The project has now grown to contain the largest exhibition of butterflies in Costa Rica, and is a learning center for understanding the butterfly life-cycle and incredible Metamorphosis Experience. On this tour visitors will learn about the incredible butterfly life-cycle, and see how we raise these beautiful creatures in our butterfly laboratory. We will also discuss the uniqueness of specific butterflies and plants found flying in each of our 4 ecological habitats. And will also learn about exotic frogs, our botanical gardens and medicinal herb areas, along with our reproduction greenhouses, and then take the rainforest River Walk through primary forest.

This is for the butterfly conservatory in El Castillo, not La Fortuna, in case there’s confusion...

This place is magical. I’ve never been so moved by nature. Walking into the first room of butterflies nearly brought me to tears, it was such an overwhelming experience. We were approached by a lovely young woman named Erica who was working there as a volunteer. She showed us around each room, told us about each type of butterfly and talked about their natural habitat and how each room was recreated to mimic those habitats. She was knowledgeable and well educated and just so sweet. We then visited the frog habitats and again were guided by an employee. We walked to the turtle pond and part of the rainforest trail. We finished the experience on the howler trail and we were lucky enough to see a mama howler with her baby. We then got to see her howl to the other monkeys in nearby trees. We really felt like we were up close and personal with nature and it’s stunning creatures. It was an amazing and spectacular experience. Pro tip: wear bug spray

Walking into the butterfly enclosures with all of them flying around was a highlight of our trip. Many different variety on display and there was an assistant to answer any questions we had. Also went and saw the frogs (they will open the enclosure door to allow you to take pictures if you ask). Only wish we could have spent more time. There is a trail through the woods on their property we didn't get to explore, but if it anything like the well tended gardens, I'm sure it was nice. Only disappointment was the limited view of the volcano (but that can be got in other nearby places).

Beautiful area. Amazing wildlife. I spent six weeks volunteering at the Butterfly Conservatory working as a nature guide. I learned a lot about the area and the wildlife. I would highly recommend a visit as you can see not only butterflies but also Howler monkeys, poisonous dart frogs and many other kinds of animals and birds.

$17 per person, personalised experience with butterfly volunteers greeting each group or couple and explaining what could be seen and naming the varieties of butterfly and telling us about the restoration project. We saw loads of free flying butterflies and a few frogs, a basilisk snd several varieties of turtles. We then enjoyed a walk along the small river and in the gardens. A relaxing and enjoyable few hours, although shorter with younger people!

A wonderful collection of live butterflies, allowing you to walk into the “cages” where they live. Beautifully displayed with excellent guides to identify the butterflies and explain their life cycle. Additionally, you can walk in the adjoining jungle area where we saw and heard howler monkeys. The owners have regrown the jungle, which had formerly been cleared for cattle grazing. They are committed to preserving the natural environment.

We loved our time here! Don’t miss out on the nice walks around the property. The volunteer who gave us the tour had a lot of knowledge about butterflies and biology in general. Really happy we made the stop. We ended up spending about 3 hours here and it was a great place to go on a rainy day in the Arenal area.

We rented a beautiful house right down the street from this place. You don't need to love butterflies to go, it is awe inspiriing. When we entered the enclosure the abundance of butterflies made you feel like you were in a Disney movie and they were going to carry you away. There are a wide variety and also a amphibian house. It was rainy when we went so we were not able to see the volcano. That was the only disappointment.

As we were staying in the AOL lodge, this was pretty close. About 15 minutes’ drive.
This is a very nice garden: with 5 or 6 different butterfly “rooms” and each of them in a different climate, and thus, different type of butterflies. And there are many different and a lotttt in numbers / quantities.
At the first butterfly room, a guide is waiting for you. She will give you all the information you want / need. I takes about +/- 1:30, depending also a bit on your interest.
There is also a frog room where you can find , behind glass, all the famous frogs of CR.
At the end , you can go back to room 1 and go thru all the rooms again, at your own pace. (And take pictures as many as you want / like) .
Once out of the rooms , you can walk freely around on the property. There are quite some trails.
It is very informative and instructive. Really worth of visiting
