This beach is about a mile long, very uncrowded, with the JW Marriott just beyond at one end and Lola's at the other. The ends have areas of volcanic rocks, which have been eroded by the tides so they are not jagged; most people wear flip-flops or other shoes to cross them, although you can do it barefoot. The sand... More

Sun sand and beautiful hot weather, need I say more?? It's another of Costa Rica great beaches. Road in from highway is a little rough in places, but a front wheel drive sedan handled it with no issues. Great beach to surf or body board or swim.... Depends on the day

Playa Avellanas is rocky, but with water shoes you can still explore. Surf is rough, so not good for babies or young children. Fine for adults and teenagers. Nice beach to walk for miles and connect to other areas.

This is a wonderful beach with good waves for body surfing. Does not have lots of shade available and the sand gets very hot. Much less touristy than Tamarindo and less crowded.

Water was cold because of the winds but it was beautiful to sit on. You can rent chairs ($5), parking is at a premium and you have to tip the attendant. Road there is washboard and very slow going. There were monkeys in the trees at the restaurant.

We loved spending the day at Playa Avellana. We had our own cards and drive ourselves down there. It took us about 20-30 minutes south of the Tamarindo area. Most of the way was on dirt roads and we even saw monkeys on the way. We took our own beach things to make our visit comfortable (towels, snorkel gear, etc.).... More

Spent three days on this incredible beach. Prestine, relaxed, local. Mauricio was our surf teacher - incredible! Find him!

Finally some peace and quiet. No more horns and near death pass attempts. Time to kick back with a couple of fresh fish tacos and a few cervezas. They don't have 40's here, they have litros!!! Pura Vida!!!
