A beautiful, of the beaten path location with natural sandy beach and great surf.

This area is getting built up. More restaurants and accommodations are being built.
The once quiet local vibe had caught on and things are booming in the area.
For now still a really quaint, quiet, surf centred place to visit and enjoy.
Highly recommend Lucy’s for a sunset cocktail and pizza.

we were staying in Hacienda Pinilla, a short walk from this beach and the JW Marriott. There is a path next to the hotel down to the beach and you can pass the hotel and walk a good 40-45 minutes to the end of Playa Avellana. There are some rocky areas, so bring water shoes or sandals, but it is mostly Flat and Firm beach, with a gentle tide that gives you lots of sand at low tide, and still a decent amount at high tide.

Good assortment of shells, too. And the sand is firm and cool and so easy to walk on. There is even a nice beach bar at the south end of the beach, with recliners and umbrellas and good food to relax at.

Loved our time at Playa Avellana and Playa Negra. A family of Howler monkeys visited our house every evening, we played in the surf and ate amazing gelato.
Especially recommend surfing lessons with Avellanas Surf School.

Went to yoga (above Lola's restaurant) and loved the class and the atmosphere (overlooking the beach). Stayed for lunch, which was delicious and the staff was so friendly. We stayed on the beach for the afternoon and absolutely enjoyed the entire day!

I have travelled around the world and have a very high standard of beaches. We came back to this beach after visiting 3 years ago as we loved it so much. The waves roll in and are great for surfing, bodyboarding or just playing in. The beach is huge and never feels real busy

The beach is long and very sparsely inhabited. Long white beach. The sea was good to body surf in. There’s a great beach restaurant there called Lola’s. It’s famous for its swimming pig but the pig wasn’t there when we were. One thing to be aware of is that the road there is quite rough.

Stunning secluded beach, but with a great surf vibe - one of the best we visited during our whole trip! It’s a bit bumpy to get there, but well worth it. AND visiting Lola’s for lunch and drinks is a must! We all wanted to go back another day, but unfortunately waited until our last day. Don’t wait until your last day because you will want to go again!!!

Always make a point t of a day trip to this beach. Our favorite. Spotless, few vendors, great surf and pristine water. Stop in at Lola's for lunch while here. Food and service is top shelf.

We had a great day at Playa Avellanas. I suggest you make a reservation in advance at Lola’s. It’s a great spot and they have nice chairs on the beach.

Thanks for a great day Andres. Great service.

Took surfing lessons here. It was busy but less busy than Tamarindo. Beautiful beach. Lola's is here. Excellent food, great service, not cheap - touristy prices. This is a good place to catch some waves 20 minutes from Tamarindo.
