Where to begin? The festival runs in the fall, check the website for the dates. It lasts for about 1 1/2 weeks if I remember correctly, and there is a full schedule of events by place and timeslot on the website.
There are two parts, one is free and one is paid. The whole thing is held on the fairgrounds, a huge open space that also has a medium sized amphitheater. On the grounds you will find a huge amount of vendor tents, like at a fair, offering arts, crafts, displays, packaged food stuffs, and cultural recreation events. There are two large food sections with an endless amount of food and snacks. There's a kids play area. There's a main stage with events happening all day and night. All of this is free.
It is in the amphitheater itself that the cultural performances ( the big ones ) are held. There was a mix of Korean Mask Dance traditional plays, coupled with ASEAN countries individual Mask Dance performances which sought to highlight their own cultures and heritages, with many of the performances incorporating masks as well.
It is hard to describe just how awesome it was, as I sit here on my couch and reflect. I would literally have to write many many pages to describe the goings on; I guess the best I can say is check out their website; then check out some youtube videos of past years performances.
Let me say this: we were in South Korea for two weeks, and we literally planned out itinerary around this ( we wanted to go on Sunday/ Monday ). Not only did we plan the trip around these dates, but we planned the dates of our trip so as to make this festival. It was pretty cool!
Hopefully if you read this review it will peek your interest to do some further investigation. When we travel we like to see cultural performances that display the heritage and traditions of the country we visit; we felt this was the best festival on offer in South Korea, and were very happy to have gone.
If you are interested and have questions, because I know that really, this review is quite lacking, PM me and I'll be happy to answer. I'm always around TA, planning the next adventure and will be happy to help!

My friend and I attended the last two days of the 2022 Andong Mask Dance Festival, the city’s first festival held since COVID-19 started. This year’s theme was Hero Returns in Chaos World, so there were a lot of superhero themed performances, sets, and decorations. The festival differed from previous festivals in that this year’s festival was street-style, and the bulk of performances took place along the streets of downtown Andong. In the past, performances were centralized in Talchum Park. The festival length was also reduced from 10 to 5 days this year (September 29, 2022 through October 3, 2022). I do not know what the structure or dates will be for next year’s festival.
The street-style festival this year meant that you could wander along the streets and find various performances going on in the middle of the street or on outdoor stages. There was no general admission fee for the festival! Rather, you paid 7,000 KRW/person (for most categories of people) if you wanted to view a performance that took place specifically in the Maskdance Theater or if you wanted to enter the Metaverse Experience Zone (which allowed people to view events virtually in light of COVID-19 concerns).
We had a blast at the festival, and if I ever find myself back in Andong in the future, I would love to attend this festival again! There was plenty to do and see, and it was extremely family friendly. There were craft tents, numerous vendors, and a variety of performances ranging from children doing taekwondo to traditional skits that involved music and dance. There were also a few international dance groups that performed, though it sounded like there had been more international groups pre-COVID. Furthermore, some events took place a little farther outside of downtown Andong, including events at Weolyeonggyo Bridge (about a 7 minute taxi ride from downtown) and the Hahoe Folk Village (about a 25 min taxi ride from downtown).
All event staff were helpful and friendly, and festival programs were available in both Korean and English. I will note that the volume of the performances that involved outdoor speakers was extremely loud, and there were fireworks at the closing ceremony, so bring earplugs if you think you might want them! Also, the festival schedule was not released online until about a week before the festival started. All in all, I highly recommend attending the festival for anyone wanting to explore Andong and traditional Korean culture!

I was one of the performer in this festival. Let me tell you - this is one of the best organized festivals all around the world. If you are near this place around september-october, i would seriously recommend not missing this festival. You can enjoy watching different cultures perfomances. It was such an amazing experience, everyone had an amazing time - both performers and the crowd.

We were only here for the very beginning of the the festival and were so impressed. The venue is walkable from the railway station, just follow the crowd. Lots of food and games, locals having fun together with several stages for performances. Big open air free stage. Quite a spectacular. We spent an evening walking round, looking at the free shows and eating and drinking. Just great.

Do you know that Andong holds a Mask Dance Festival🎭annually (end of Sept-Oct)? I went there and did so many activities including making my own mask, learning the basic dances, watching mask dance performances, making my own mask-shaped air freshener..etc.

We attended the final Day of the Mask and Dance Festival. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Presented on a limited basis, but on a huge fairgrounds, it offers many performance experiences. Lots of booths and activities for families to participate. We concentrated on the Mask and Dance performances in the main auditorium, lining up for tickets about an hour before each. Since it was the final day, these performances were "The Best of...". Had dinner at one of the large tent restaurants, and the food was very good. An event to remember.

The performances at the main stage were so wonderful and that was the reason why we visited the festival for 3 days so that we could enjoy different cultural performances. The local people and the performers were highly involved in the festival so we were very excited and enjoyable. Highly recommend to every foreign visitors.

For the Andong Mask Dance Festival - do you need to buy tickets in advance or once there? Will there be some performances that will sell out? Where are some of the best places to stay? Thanks
